‘9-1-1’ is heading into its 10th season, and the show is wasting no time reminding fans why its premieres are known for huge disasters. This time, the firefighters and first responders of the 118 are reportedly facing something they have never dealt with before: a volcano.

According to the ‘9-1-1’ fan wiki, the volcanic disaster is expected to be at the center of the Season 10 premiere. The series has already thrown its characters into earthquakes, tsunamis, plane crashes, fires, and other massive emergencies, but a volcanic eruption would take things to another level. It is exactly the kind of opening storyline fans have come to expect from the long-running ABC drama.

The timing of the storyline has also caught some attention. Showrunner Tim Minear spoke to EW about the strange connection between the fictional disaster and real-world events surrounding volcanoes. When asked about the timing, Minear simply joked, “It’s not my fault.” The comment adds a little humor to what should be a very serious opening episode.

Of course, the volcano is only one part of what Season 10 has planned. The new season will also continue several major stories from the previous season, giving the characters plenty to deal with after the chaos of Season 9. Bobby’s death continues to affect the team, while Athena is moving into a new stage of her career after everything she went through.

Athena is expected to take on a detective role, which could give her story a very different direction. Instead of always responding to emergencies as part of the 118, she will have a chance to investigate cases from another side of law enforcement. It could also lead to some interesting changes in how she works with the rest of the team.

Buck has his own major storyline waiting for him. He is continuing to foster Theo, who is eventually revealed to be his biological son. Their relationship has already created plenty of emotional moments, and Season 10 should give the show more room to explore what being a father means for Buck.

Eddie is also dealing with the aftermath of being stabbed. His recovery is expected to remain an important part of the new season, while May begins a new chapter by training to become a nurse. Her growing relationship with Ravi is another storyline that should continue as the characters move forward.

Then there is Chimney, who is adjusting to life as the new captain of the 118. Taking over such an important role is not going to be easy, especially with the team facing another round of extreme emergencies. How Chimney handles the pressure could become one of the more interesting parts of the season.

Fans may also be wondering whether the wider ‘9-1-1’ universe will become part of the story. ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ has been renewed for a second season, and the two shows already crossed over during the Firefighter Games storyline. There has also been plenty of fan talk about characters from ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ appearing again, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Production on Season 10 started on July 27, and ABC has set the season premiere for Thursday, October 15. That means fans will not have to wait much longer to see how the volcano disaster plays out and what happens to the characters after the emotional events of Season 9.

A volcano is certainly a massive way to begin a milestone season, but that is exactly what makes ‘9-1-1’ so much fun. The show has never been afraid to push its disasters to ridiculous levels while still giving its characters serious personal stories. With a huge opening emergency and several major changes waiting for the 118, Season 10 looks ready to keep that tradition alive.
