Quentin Tarantino’s First Stage Play Just Found Its Wildest Star: Sacha Baron Cohen

Quentin Tarantino is leaving the movie set behind for a little while, and his next big project is taking him somewhere he has never gone before: the stage. Even more surprising, the filmmaker is bringing Sacha Baron Cohen with him.

Baron Cohen, the comedian behind Borat and Ali G, will make his stage debut as the lead in Tarantino’s first-ever play, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier.’ The project is already shaping up to be one of the more unexpected theater events coming to London, especially with two major names from film and comedy stepping into a completely new setting.

According to information released by the production, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ will be a swashbuckling comedy set in Europe during the 1830s. The story is expected to feature plenty of deception, disguises, romance, and larger-than-life characters. Producers describe it as “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.”

That description sounds very different from the crime stories and violent thrillers that have made Tarantino famous, but the project will still have his personality all over it. The official synopsis calls the play “a sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”

The play is being produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sonia Friedman Productions has worked on major stage productions including ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ and ‘Paddington: The Musical,’ giving the project some serious theater experience behind the scenes.

‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ is currently planned to open in London’s West End in spring 2027, although the exact theater has not been announced yet. More casting is also expected as the production moves forward.

For Baron Cohen, the role is another chance to show a different side of his career. He has spent much of his time playing outrageous comedy characters on screen, but he has also taken on more traditional acting roles. One of those was in the 2007 movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd,’ where he played Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Still, performing in a full stage production is a completely different challenge. There is no camera to stop and restart a scene, and the actor has to connect with an audience in the room every night. Having Baron Cohen as the lead should give Tarantino plenty of room to play with comedy, especially given the actor’s history of unpredictable performances.

The project also comes at an interesting point in Tarantino’s career. The director has spent years talking about making what could be his tenth and final movie, but that project has not moved ahead at the speed some fans expected. Tarantino has previously said he is in “no hurry” to make the film.

Instead, he appears to be putting a lot of energy into theater. Tarantino has reportedly suggested that ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ could take as long as two years to complete, making it much more than a quick experiment between movies.

Baron Cohen also has another major comedy project coming soon. He is set to return as Ali G in the Amazon MGM movie ‘Ali G Who Iz I?,’ which is scheduled to release globally in October. That means fans could be seeing plenty more of his classic comedy style before he walks onto the West End stage.

There are still plenty of questions surrounding ‘The Popinjay Cavalier.’ The full story has not been revealed, the theater has yet to be announced, and additional cast members are still expected. There is also no director attached at this point based on current reports.

What is clear is that Tarantino is trying something completely new. Instead of another movie filled with guns, criminals, and revenge, he is heading into the world of live theater with a period comedy. Add Sacha Baron Cohen to the mix, and it is hard not to wonder just how strange and entertaining this production could become.

For now, fans will have to wait until 2027 to find out what Tarantino has created. But with Baron Cohen leading the cast, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ already has a pretty wild combination of talent at its center.
