‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Take the Biggest Box Office Record Ever

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is getting closer to doing something that seemed almost impossible just a few weeks ago. The Marvel and Sony movie is now just days, and possibly only a handful of screenings, away from becoming the highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office.

According to domestic box office figures, the Tom Holland-led sequel has already made around $924.9 million in the US and Canada. That puts it only about $12.7 million behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has held the domestic record with $936.6 million since 2015. After more than a decade at the top, The Force Awakens could finally be pushed down by another blockbuster.

Brand New Day has been moving at a remarkable speed since it arrived in theaters. The movie opened with an estimated $360.1 million in its first weekend, giving it the biggest domestic opening ever and putting it ahead of Avengers: Endgame. Instead of slowing down after that huge start, the film continued to pull in massive crowds week after week.

The numbers became even more impressive as the movie passed one major milestone after another. Brand New Day reached $700 million, $800 million, and $900 million faster than any other movie before it. It reached $900 million in only 36 days, while The Force Awakens needed 50 days to reach the same figure.

That kind of pace is a big reason the current record is now in serious danger. Industry trackers are expecting Brand New Day to finish somewhere around $950 million to $960 million in North America. If that prediction comes true, the movie will not just pass The Force Awakens. It will create a clear gap between itself and the previous record holder.

The movie’s strong reception also seems to be helping. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists Brand New Day with a 90 percent critics score and a 98 percent audience score. Those numbers have given the film strong word of mouth, which can be very important for a movie that has been in theaters for more than a month.

Theaters are also seeing just how powerful the Spider-Man name remains. Cinemark announced that Brand New Day became the biggest domestic release in the company’s history in less than three weeks. Justin McDaniel of Cinemark described the result as an “extraordinary achievement” and pointed to the lasting popularity of Spider-Man with different generations of moviegoers.

The success has not been limited to North America, either. Brand New Day has reportedly earned more than $2.33 billion worldwide, putting it among the 10 biggest movies in global box office history. It has also become Sony’s biggest release ever in both the domestic and international markets.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie brings Tom Holland back as Peter Parker, with Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal also part of the cast. The film’s huge performance has helped make 2026 a much stronger year for the domestic box office as well. The US and Canadian market has already passed $7 billion for the year, running more than 20 percent ahead of the same point in 2025.

At this stage, it is no longer really a question of whether Brand New Day can challenge The Force Awakens. The only real question is when it will take the record. With just $12.7 million left to go, the Spider-Man sequel could make history this weekend.

If it does, it will give Marvel and Sony another major box office achievement and bring an end to one of the longest runs at the top of the domestic box office. The Force Awakens has enjoyed the record since 2015, but Spider-Man now has the chance to start a new chapter in the record book.
