Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien Reunite for ‘No Free Lunch’ Nearly 30 Years After Starship Troopers

Nearly 30 years after they first shared the screen in Starship Troopers, Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien are teaming up again. The two actors have reunited for a new thriller called No Free Lunch, giving fans of the 1997 sci-fi classic a chance to see them work together once more. The movie is already attracting attention because of their history, but this time they are trading space battles for a much darker mystery.

According to Deadline, Richards and Van Dien recently finished filming No Free Lunch in Hamilton, Ontario. The project comes almost three decades after Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers introduced them as Carmen Ibanez and Johnny Rico. That movie eventually became a major cult favorite, and both actors remained closely linked to it even as their careers moved in different directions. They have appeared at conventions and other fan events together over the years, but this marks their first major on-screen reunion since the original film.

No Free Lunch will put the actors in very different roles. Richards and Van Dien will play detectives and FBI agents who become involved in a dangerous kidnapping case. Their characters have to move quickly as they try to find two women who have been taken by a deeply disturbed former surgeon. The story promises plenty of tension, with the investigation becoming a race against time.

The film centers on a mother and daughter, played by Arcadia Kendal and Lara Daans. What begins as a normal college drop-off quickly turns into a nightmare when the two are kidnapped. Their captor, played by Sebastian Pigott, is a former surgeon with a disturbing plan. He is determined to keep a promise connected to his late mother and puts his victims through a series of dangerous games while preparing to force one of them into marriage.

That gives Richards and Van Dien a very different kind of story from the one that first brought them together. Instead of fighting giant alien bugs or serving in a futuristic military, they will be trying to solve a kidnapping and stop a dangerous criminal. It should also give the actors a chance to show a different side of their on-screen chemistry after so many years apart.

No Free Lunch is being directed by Damian Lee, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Larissa Laskin. The production comes from Horizon Line and March On Productions and is the third project in their current slate. Other films connected to the slate include Silent Nightfall, starring Stana Katic and Elisha Cuthbert, and Greatest Actress, which features Mena Suvari and C. Thomas Howell.

The movie has also brought together a solid group of filmmakers behind the camera. Maurizio Guarini is handling the score, while Raf Strupinski served as cinematographer. Bennet De Brabandere is producing for Horizon Line, with Richard Salvatore serving as executive producer for March On. Red Sea Media’s Roman Kopelevich is handling international distribution, while Quiver Distribution is taking care of domestic sales.

For Starship Troopers fans, however, the biggest attraction will clearly be seeing Richards and Van Dien together again. Their original movie has remained popular for years, and the reunion comes at a time when Hollywood continues to find new ways to bring familiar stars back together. The pair may no longer be playing young soldiers heading into an intergalactic war, but their return could still give longtime fans a fun reason to check out the new thriller.

No Free Lunch is currently expected to arrive in spring 2027. There is still plenty of time before the movie reaches audiences, but the Richards and Van Dien reunion already gives it a built-in audience. After almost three decades, seeing the two Starship Troopers stars share the screen again could be one of the film’s biggest selling points.
