‘Dune: Part Three’ Ticket Demand Explodes as UK Cinemas Add More IMAX Screenings

The excitement for Dune: Part Three is getting harder to ignore. Months before Denis Villeneuve’s final chapter reaches theaters, fans are already rushing to secure the best seats they can find. The latest sign of that huge demand is coming from the UK, where major cinema chains have added more early screenings after tickets for the first showings started disappearing quickly.

Cineworld and Odeon have both added more IMAX and premium large-format screenings for December 15, giving fans an early chance to see the movie three days before its wider UK release on December 18. The extra sessions were added after the original early screenings proved far more popular than expected. Odeon has even opened another session at one of its Dolby locations in London’s West End to deal with the extra demand.

BFI IMAX in London is also preparing a special early screening on December 15. The movie will be shown in IMAX 70mm at the venue, which describes its screen as the biggest in the country. Tickets for that screening went on sale at 9 a.m. on September 9, and the strong interest has added to a growing pattern surrounding Dune: Part Three. Every time new premium tickets become available, fans seem ready to move quickly.

The excitement makes sense when you look at the journey of Villeneuve’s Dune movies. The first film arrived in 2021 and turned a famously difficult science fiction story into a major cinematic event. Dune: Part Two then pushed the series even further, becoming one of the biggest movies of 2024 and leaving fans eager to see how the story ends. Now, with the final film approaching, audiences are treating the last chapter as something they want to experience on the biggest screen possible.

Villeneuve has encouraged that idea himself. During a trailer event in Los Angeles, the director spoke about wanting audiences to see Dune: Part Three on the biggest screen possible. His comments were reported by Sharp Magazine, and they match the way the movie was made. Unlike the previous films, Villeneuve has used IMAX technology across the production, combining IMAX-certified digital cameras with IMAX film cameras. That makes the premium format an important part of the movie rather than simply another way to watch it.

The story should also give fans plenty of reasons to return. Dune: Part Three takes place nearly 20 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, who is now Emperor and has to deal with the consequences of his rise to power. The movie is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah and brings back Zendaya as Chani, along with Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa, Isaach De Bankolé, and Charlotte Rampling. Robert Pattinson also joins the cast as the new villain Scytale.

The ticket rush is not limited to the UK. Earlier IMAX 70mm ticket sales in the United States reportedly sold out within hours, while some tickets later appeared on resale sites for extremely high prices. Some listings were even approaching $1,000 for a single seat. American fans have also dealt with overloaded ticketing systems during previous sales, showing just how much interest there is in seeing Villeneuve’s final Dune movie as early as possible.

The timing of the release adds another interesting part to the story. Dune: Part Three is scheduled to open on the same December weekend as Avengers: Doomsday, creating a major box office battle between two very different blockbuster franchises. The early screenings could help Dune build strong word of mouth before its official release, especially if fans come out of theaters impressed by the final chapter.

For now, UK cinemas are responding to the demand by adding more chances to see the movie early. Whether that will finally be enough to satisfy fans remains unclear, but the message from audiences is already very clear. Dune: Part Three is not just another December release. For many moviegoers, it is an event they want to experience in IMAX, on the biggest screen they can find.
