Kevin Feige Teases a Massive Comic Book Legacy for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’

Marvel Studios may be preparing something much bigger than a normal Avengers movie with Avengers: Secret Wars. While the studio has kept most details about the film hidden, Marvel president Kevin Feige has now offered some of his clearest hints yet about how the movie could connect to the comics. His comments suggest that Secret Wars will pull from the history of Marvel rather than simply adapting one comic book story from beginning to end.

Feige shared his thoughts in the foreword for a new Marvel Premier Collection edition of Secret Wars. The Marvel Studios boss talked about taking ideas from Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s 2015 Secret Wars story while also using material from the many Marvel movies and shows that came before it. He described the plan as a way to “weave a new story inspired by the vast tapestry of our comics and films.” That could be a major clue about what Marvel has been building toward with its current saga.

The 2015 comic is already one of the most popular theories surrounding the upcoming movie. In that story, the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe are destroyed, leaving Doctor Doom with incredible power over a strange new world called Battleworld. Doom becomes almost godlike and rules over the broken remains of reality. While Marvel has not confirmed exactly how much of that story will appear in the movie, Feige’s comments make it clear that the comic is an important source of inspiration.

Doctor Doom appears to be at the heart of Marvel’s plans. Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which will arrive before Secret Wars. Feige described Doom as the greatest villain in Marvel history and made it clear that the character will be central to the larger story. That is an important detail because Marvel could have used Secret Wars simply as a giant crossover, but the studio seems to be giving Doom a major role in shaping what happens to the MCU.

Feige also spoke about the strange mix of qualities that make Doom such an interesting character. The villain can show loyalty and even moments of nobility, but he is also obsessed with power and control. That complicated personality could allow Downey to play Doom in a very different way from his famous Tony Stark role. Instead of creating a villain who is simply evil, Marvel appears interested in showing why Doom believes he should be the person controlling everything.

There are also hints that the movie could embrace some of the stranger moments from the comics. Feige mentioned images such as Steve Rogers fighting on top of a dinosaur and heroes battling hordes of zombies. These are the kinds of wild ideas that could make Secret Wars feel very different from a standard superhero sequel. It is not clear whether those exact scenes will appear in the finished movie, but Feige’s references suggest Marvel is not afraid to look at the more unusual parts of the source material.

Another major part of the story could be the number of characters finally meeting for the first time. Feige teased crossover moments involving characters who have never appeared together on screen. After years of Marvel movies, Disney+ shows, alternate realities, and animated projects, the studio now has an enormous collection of characters it can bring together. Secret Wars could become the movie where many of those separate stories finally collide.

Avengers: Doomsday will arrive on December 18, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for December 17, 2027. Anthony and Joe Russo are directing both movies after previously working on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their return gives Marvel a team with experience handling huge crossover stories and massive casts.

Feige’s comments do not confirm that Secret Wars will completely reboot the MCU or follow the 2015 comic exactly. However, they do show that Marvel is taking the comic book history seriously. The studio appears to be using the comics as a foundation while mixing them with years of its own movie history. If Marvel can bring those ideas together successfully, Secret Wars could become one of the biggest and most ambitious superhero movies the studio has ever made.
