Thomas Jane’s Punisher Workout Sparks New ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Rumors

Thomas Jane has once again found himself at the center of Marvel fan theories after sharing a new gym photo online. The actor, who played Frank Castle in 2004’s The Punisher, posted a picture from his workout, and fans quickly started wondering if the image could be connected to a possible return in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The idea may sound like a stretch, but Marvel’s current multiverse story has made almost anything seem possible. Secret Wars is expected to bring together characters and actors from different parts of Marvel history, so fans have become used to looking for small hints about potential surprise appearances. Jane’s latest post was enough to get that rumor machine running again.

The photo itself does not confirm anything about Marvel. Jane simply appears to be working out, but the timing caught people’s attention. With Secret Wars expected to feature major legacy characters, some fans immediately wondered if Jane could be getting ready to play Frank Castle again. There has been no announcement from Marvel Studios, Jane, or anyone officially connected to the movie confirming that he is returning.

This is also not the first time Jane’s workouts have led to Punisher rumors. The actor has been seen training with Jon Bernthal, who currently plays Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Those workouts have previously been connected to Bernthal preparing for his own projects, including Daredevil: Born Again, rather than evidence that Jane was joining the MCU.

Jane’s own comments about the character also make the situation more complicated. In the past, he has left the possibility of returning open under the right circumstances. In 2021, he said he would consider playing Frank Castle again if fans wanted it and the right story came along. That gave supporters some hope, even though there was never a real commitment from the actor.

His more recent comments have sounded much less interested in a comeback. While promoting his movie Frontier Crucible, Jane was asked about the possibility of returning for Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Instead of teasing a possible appearance, he talked about his experience playing the character and explained why he felt the role eventually found a better fit with Bernthal.

Jane has also previously spoken about feeling like he was not the perfect choice for Frank Castle. He pointed out that the character is Italian and suggested that he never completely matched that part of Castle’s identity, even though changes were made to his appearance for the 2004 movie. He has been supportive of Bernthal’s version of the character, making it harder to read his latest gym photo as a clear sign that he wants the role back.

Still, Marvel fans have plenty of reasons to keep guessing. The studio has already shown that it is willing to bring back actors from older Marvel movies, especially as the multiverse becomes a bigger part of the story. Previous returns involving actors such as Wesley Snipes and Chris Evans have shown that unexpected appearances can become major moments for audiences.

That history is exactly why a simple social media post can suddenly become a major fan theory. Jane may simply be staying fit, but fans know that Marvel productions often keep their biggest surprises hidden until the last possible moment. Until the studio says otherwise, though, the connection between his workout and Secret Wars remains nothing more than speculation.

For now, there is no confirmed evidence that Thomas Jane will return as the Punisher. His history with the character, his previous comments, and his connection to Bernthal have given fans plenty to discuss, but none of those things prove that Frank Castle from the 2004 movie is coming back. If Secret Wars really is planning a huge celebration of Marvel’s past, however, Jane is exactly the kind of former star fans will continue watching closely.
