‘Practical Magic 2’ Star Sandra Bullock Opens up About the Two Career Choices That Changed Everything

Sandra Bullock has spent decades proving that she is not afraid to change direction. The actress has gone from romantic comedies and action movies to serious dramas and award-winning performances, building a career that has stayed strong for more than 30 years. Now, while promoting Practical Magic 2 with Nicole Kidman, Bullock is looking back at some of the decisions that helped shape her path in Hollywood.

In a recent conversation with Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock opened up about two choices she considers especially important. One happened very early in her career, when she was still trying to find work and earning money as a waitress in New York. The other came years later, when she was already a major star and had become closely connected to romantic comedies.

Bullock’s early experiences were not always easy. Like many actors trying to break into the business, she went through countless auditions while hoping for a chance to prove herself. But some of those auditions crossed a line, and Bullock said she was willing to walk away rather than accept situations that made her uncomfortable.

Speaking to Aniston, Bullock remembered just how bad some of those experiences could be. “I was auditioning for every pervert that existed asking me to drop my pants,” she said, according to Variety. At the time, saying no could have felt dangerous for an actor who did not have much power in the industry. There was always the fear that turning down an opportunity could mean losing the chance to work.

Still, Bullock refused to let that pressure decide what she was willing to accept. Her comments show that protecting her boundaries was one of the first major choices she made for herself as an actress. It may not have looked like a career move at the time, but it helped establish the kind of control she wanted over her work.

Her second major decision came after she had already become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. By the 2000s, Bullock was strongly associated with romantic comedies and had become one of the genre’s most reliable names. Movies such as Miss Congeniality and Two Weeks Notice were popular with audiences, but Bullock said she eventually became tired of seeing the genre treated as something less serious.

Instead of staying with the formula that had made her successful, she decided to take a different path. That led her to Crash in 2005, giving her the chance to show audiences a more dramatic side of her acting. The move paid off. Crash went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, while Bullock continued expanding the types of roles she was willing to take.

That did not mean she completely abandoned comedy. Bullock later returned to the genre with The Proposal in 2009, which became another major hit. She also continued taking on very different projects, including The Blind Side, Gravity, Bird Box, and The Lost City. Her career has rarely stayed in one place for very long.

Her awards history also shows just how unpredictable her career has been. In 2009, Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Blind Side while also receiving a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for All About Steve. The unusual combination became one of the most memorable moments of her career and showed that she was willing to take risks even when the results were not guaranteed.

Her most recent romantic comedy before returning to Practical Magic 2 was The Lost City in 2022. The movie became a strong theatrical performer, earning around $192 million worldwide and proving that audiences were still happy to see Bullock in a lighter role.

Bullock’s latest comments give a better idea of how much thought has gone into that long career. Her choices were not always about chasing the biggest role or following the safest path. Sometimes they were about knowing when to say no, while other times they meant stepping away from something that was already working.

That willingness to make difficult choices may be one of the biggest reasons Bullock has remained so popular. She has changed genres, taken risks, walked away from uncomfortable situations, and returned to familiar territory when the right project came along.
