Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is About to Make Box Office History, Dethroning ‘The Force Awakens’

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is getting closer and closer to one of the biggest box office milestones in movie history. Tom Holland’s latest adventure as Peter Parker has already become a huge theatrical success, and now it is only a few million dollars away from taking the domestic box office record away from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

The Sony and Marvel movie has been in theaters for almost two months, but audiences are still showing up in large numbers. According to the latest box office tracking information provided in the report, the movie added another $2 million on its seventh Friday, bringing its North American total to $928.8 million. That leaves it around $8.5 million behind “The Force Awakens,” which has held the domestic record at $936.6 million since 2015.

What makes the run even more impressive is how quickly “Brand New Day” has reached this point. The movie opened with an enormous $360.1 million weekend, immediately putting it on a different level from most superhero releases. Instead of seeing its numbers fall sharply after that opening, the film continued to bring in strong crowds and stayed at number one domestically for six weekends in a row.

The movie has also been moving faster than “The Force Awakens” at several major points. “Brand New Day” reached $800 million in North America after only 19 days, beating the previous record of 23 days set by the “Star Wars” movie. It then reached $900 million in just 36 days, while “The Force Awakens” needed 50 days to reach the same number.

That makes the current record chase especially interesting. Based on the projections mentioned in the report, “Brand New Day” could reach around $935 million by Sunday. If the film continues to bring in even modest numbers during the following days, it could pass “The Force Awakens” sometime around September 16 or 17 and officially become the biggest domestic movie ever.

The achievement would be another major win for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The film has already pushed the character past another major milestone, taking the franchise above $2 billion worldwide. It has also moved past “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to become Sony’s highest-grossing release ever, according to the information provided in the report.

That change may have helped the movie maintain its audience for so long. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” originally reached its $936.6 million domestic total during its 2015 theatrical run. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film was a major event for Disney and Lucasfilm as the studio brought “Star Wars” back to theaters following its acquisition of Lucasfilm. Its domestic record has remained untouched for years, even as several massive blockbusters have come close.

Now, however, “Brand New Day” appears ready to finally end that run. The film still has to make up the remaining gap, but its pace suggests the record could fall very soon. If it does, Spider-Man will have another historic achievement to add to an already massive theatrical run, and the final total could end up well above the current record rather than beating it by only a small amount.
