‘Diablo’ Series Is Finally Coming to Netflix After Years of Rumors
‘Diablo’ is finally getting the screen adaptation fans have been waiting years to see. Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that an animated series based on the popular video game franchise is in development at Netflix, putting an end to years of rumors, reports, and speculation about whether the project would ever actually happen.
The news was announced during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Blizzard president Johanna Faries shared the announcement with fans, presenting the series as part of the company’s larger plan to bring its major gaming worlds to audiences through different forms of entertainment. According to Variety, Faries also spoke about how important BlizzCon is to the Blizzard team and how the event gives the company a chance to show fans what it has been working on.
“BlizzCon represents so much for the team,” Faries said, according to comments reported by Variety. The event also marked the first BlizzCon since Microsoft completed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, making the announcement an important moment for the company and its biggest franchises.
For Netflix, ‘Diablo’ is a natural fit. The game series is known for its dark fantasy setting, brutal monsters, supernatural battles, and stories involving angels and demons. The action takes place in Sanctuary, a world caught between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Humans are stuck in the middle of that war, with heroes regularly forced to fight powerful demons and other creatures threatening their world.
The franchise has been around since 1996 and has become one of Blizzard’s biggest names. There are now four main games, with ‘Diablo IV’ arriving in 2023. The latest game reportedly made more than $666 million in its first week, showing just how large the audience for the series has become. The timing of the Netflix announcement is also notable because 2026 marks the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
The road to this series has been anything but simple. Rumors about a ‘Diablo’ animated project first started gaining attention around 2018 and 2019, when reports suggested that Netflix could be working on anime-style versions of ‘Diablo’ and ‘Overwatch.’ Those reports became even more interesting in 2020 after former Blizzard president Nick van Dyk listed himself on LinkedIn as an executive producer on an anime-style ‘Diablo’ project that was reportedly in pre-production for Netflix.
After that, however, things went quiet. No official announcement followed, and fans were left wondering whether the adaptation had been canceled or simply stuck in development. Now Blizzard has confirmed that the project is real, although there is still a lot that remains unknown.
At the moment, there is no confirmed cast, writer, animation studio, episode count, or release date. Netflix has also not made its own separate announcement yet, meaning Blizzard is currently the source confirming the project. That makes the news official, but fans will likely have to wait a while before learning what the series will actually look like.
Still, the announcement gives ‘Diablo’ fans something they have wanted for years: proof that Sanctuary is finally heading to television. Netflix has already found major success with video game adaptations, and an animated ‘Diablo’ series gives the streamer another dark fantasy world to explore. Whether it can reach the same level of success as other gaming adaptations remains unknown, but after such a long wait, simply knowing the series is moving forward is a major win for fans.
