‘Bugonia’ Star Emma Stone and Chris Pine Caught Getting Cozy on the Set of Their New Rom-Com
Emma Stone has built one of the most acclaimed résumés in Hollywood over the past few years, moving from awards-season darling in ‘Poor Things’ to earning fresh nominations for ‘Bugonia.’ Now she’s stepping into decidedly lighter territory, teaming up with Chris Pine for the first time in a project that’s been generating buzz since it was first announced earlier this year.
That project, Universal’s ‘The Catch,’ has been described as a blend of ‘Bull Durham’ and ‘Notting Hill,’ with Stone playing what’s been billed as the most hated woman in baseball. Directed by Stone’s own husband, former ‘SNL’ segment director Dave McCary, the film rounds out its cast with Tim Robbins, Ashley Padilla as Stone’s sister, and Druski as her character’s bodyguard.
Now, fresh photos from the Brooklyn set have given fans their first real look at Stone and Pine together in character, capturing the pair in close, affectionate moments outside a suburban home as filming continues on location in New York. The images mark one of the clearest glimpses yet into the on-screen chemistry audiences can expect from the pairing once the film arrives.
That chemistry was put fully on display just before these photos surfaced, when Stone and Pine filmed an extended kiss scene together on Friday, September 11. According to reports from the set, the embrace lasted a full 23 seconds, with Pine sporting his arm in a sling as part of his character, all set against the backdrop of an overgrown front yard.
Earlier that same day, Stone had been filming a separate set of scenes involving gardening, dressed in a navy sweater vest layered over a white shirt with a gardening apron tied around her waist. In between takes, she reportedly received direction notes directly from McCary, continuing their creative partnership both on and off set.
This latest round of filming builds on footage captured throughout the summer, including an earlier session in the same Brooklyn neighborhood back in August, when Stone shot scenes alongside Robbins and Padilla. Pine and Druski were also spotted filming in the area around that same time, suggesting the production has been steadily working through key scenes across multiple cast configurations.
Part of what’s fueling interest in these set photos is simply the novelty of seeing Stone and Pine share the screen for the first time. Despite both actors having spent years as fixtures of major studio releases, their careers hadn’t previously crossed over into a shared project until ‘The Catch’ brought them together.
The film’s screenplay has gone through several hands, originally written by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin before getting a more recent pass from ‘Hacks’ co-creator Jen Statsky and ‘Adam Ruins Everything’ writer Travis Helwig. Behind the scenes, the producing team includes Stone and McCary alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Michael H. Weber, and Ali Herting, giving the project a genuinely stacked creative pedigree heading into its 2027 release.
With ‘The Catch’ currently slated to hit theaters on May 21, 2027, these early glimpses from the Brooklyn set are likely just the beginning of what promises to be a steady stream of behind-the-scenes buzz as filming continues. Given Stone’s recent run of critically acclaimed performances and Pine’s own history of leading well-received romantic projects, expectations are already building for this unlikely but intriguing pairing.
