‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Just Days Away From Rewriting Box Office History

Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has spent nearly two months quietly assembling one of the most dominant theatrical runs in modern box office history. What began as an already massive opening weekend has since snowballed into a genuine record-chasing phenomenon that’s kept industry watchers checking daily updates.

That momentum started immediately. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened to a staggering $360.1 million domestic weekend back in late July, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ previous opening record of $357.1 million and instantly signaling this wasn’t going to follow the typical superhero release pattern. Just seventeen days later, the film crossed $2 billion globally, becoming only the eighth movie in history to reach that milestone, while also setting single-day records for the biggest Monday and Tuesday grosses ever recorded.

Now, according to Exhibitor Relations, the film has added another $8.4 million in its seventh week of release, pushing its domestic total to $935.1 million and putting it just $1.5 million away from claiming the all-time North American box office record currently held by 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at $936.5 million.

That pace has been genuinely unusual from the start. ‘Brand New Day’ reached $900 million domestically in just 36 days, compared to the 50 days it took ‘The Force Awakens’ to hit that same benchmark, a gap that highlights just how consistently the film has performed week over week rather than fading after its initial opening surge.

Part of that consistency came from an unprecedented six consecutive weekends spent at number one domestically, a streak matched by only one other release this entire decade. That run finally ended in its seventh week when the newly released legacy sequel ‘Practical Magic 2,’ reuniting Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, took over the top spot, though ‘Brand New Day’ has kept adding millions to its total even after losing its perch at number one.

What’s arguably most striking is just how many screens the film continues to occupy this deep into its release. As of its most recent weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ was still playing in roughly 3,520 North American theaters, an extraordinarily high count for a film 40-plus days into its run, actually exceeding the theater counts both ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘The Force Awakens’ maintained at similar points in their own theatrical lives.

Globally, the numbers are just as staggering. With a reported production budget of around $225 million, the film has already earned back more than ten times that amount worldwide, pushing its global total past $2.4 billion and making it the second-fastest film ever to reach $1 billion globally, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in that particular race.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside Zendaya and Sadie Sink, ‘Brand New Day’ now sits on the very edge of officially becoming the highest-grossing domestic release in box office history. Based on the film’s current trajectory, that milestone moment appears likely to arrive within the next few days.

For a franchise that’s already redefined what a modern Spider-Man movie can accomplish commercially, dethroning an eleven-year-old record held by one of the biggest ‘Star Wars’ releases ever would mark an almost unthinkable capstone to this theatrical run. With the finish line now measured in mere millions rather than tens of millions, all eyes remain on exactly when ‘Brand New Day’ officially crosses that threshold.

Do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day will become the highest-grossing domestic movie ever?
