Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Revealed: A Single Contaminated Pill, Sources Say

In the months before her death, Hayden Panettiere had been unusually candid with fans about struggles she’d long kept private, offering glimpses of a more personal side than the public had typically seen from the former child star. Best known for her breakout roles in ‘Heroes,’ ‘Nashville,’ and the ‘Scream’ franchise, Panettiere had spent years navigating fame since childhood while occasionally speaking openly about her past struggles with alcohol addiction and depression.

Panettiere died on August 16 in Greenville, South Carolina, at age 36, found unresponsive at a residence where she had been temporarily staying. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m. that day, just days before what would have been her 37th birthday.

Now, according to a new TMZ report, multiple law enforcement sources believe they’ve identified what caused her death. Investigators reportedly believe Panettiere died after taking a single oxycodone pill that had been laced with fentanyl.

Sources told TMZ that Panettiere had a long-time drug dealer based in Los Angeles who supplied her with several black-market prescription medications, including oxycodone. She is believed to have taken multiple pills during a flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before her death, followed by another oxycodone pill the following morning, the one investigators now suspect had been contaminated.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is reportedly working to trace that fatal pill back to its source, with agents in both Los Angeles and South Carolina involved in the ongoing investigation. TMZ drew a comparison to the case of rapper Mac Miller, whose supplier was later convicted for providing him with fentanyl-laced pills that contributed to his own death.

According to a police report, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach Hickerson were present at the South Carolina apartment at the time. Hickerson reportedly administered Narcan to Panettiere before paramedics arrived, though the effort was ultimately unsuccessful. When officers arrived, they found paramedics already performing CPR on the unresponsive actress.

An autopsy reportedly found no signs of trauma, and police have said they observed no signs of foul play at the scene. Panettiere’s official cause of death remains pending, with authorities still awaiting final toxicology results before confirming the working theory investigators have described to TMZ.

For a performer who rose to fame as a teenager and spent much of her adult life in the public eye, Panettiere’s death marks a genuinely heartbreaking end to a career that touched millions of viewers across television and film.
