John Mulaney Steals the Show With a Savage ‘Billion-Dollar Streamer’ Bit at the Emmys
Presenting slots at award shows tend to be the throwaway moments between the actual news, a few minutes of filler before the envelope gets opened. Every so often, though, a comedian gets handed the microphone and turns those two forgettable minutes into the moment everyone’s still talking about the next morning.
That’s exactly what happened at this year’s Emmys when John Mulaney took the stage to present Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Rather than sticking to a straightforward introduction, Mulaney used his time to deliver one of the sharpest, most unexpected bits of the entire ceremony, catching both the audience and the broadcast off guard.
Before even getting to the nominees, Mulaney turned his attention to the platforms bankrolling modern television, telling the crowd, “It’s these couple of days where you find out just how much you mean to your billion-dollar streamer.” He then built the joke out further, mimicking a streamer’s sudden affection toward its talent: “We love you. We want you to know how important you are to this storytelling family,” before snapping into a colder tone with, “Can I get a plus-one?” “Get out of here.”
The billion-dollar streamer riff was just the opening act. Mulaney framed the entire presentation around the idea that Lead Actor in a Drama Series was somehow the category finally giving men their due, joking that men have been historically underrepresented on television since its very invention.
He leaned further into the bit by claiming that for the first three years television existed, there were no men on it at all, describing that early era as nothing but “beauty contests and children talking to hand puppets until the early ’60s,” before a man finally walked out and declared, “Enough! My name is Fonzie, and the president’s been shot.” From there, Mulaney pivoted into poking fun at the current crop of nominated actors, contrasting “Method acting” with what he called regular, less annoying acting.

The bit reached its most talked-about moment when Mulaney referenced a comment from DJ Khaled about men not performing oral sex on their wives, a punchline that got bleeped by NBC’s standards and practices but still landed with the live audience regardless of the censorship.
The reaction across entertainment coverage was immediate and largely glowing. Coverage from outlets recapping the night’s best and worst moments singled out Mulaney’s segment as one of the standout highlights, with some going so far as to suggest the Television Academy should consider him for hosting duties at a future ceremony.
Mulaney’s Emmy history adds an extra layer to the moment, given that he previously won a Primetime Emmy himself for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special tied to his 2018 special “Kid Gorgeous.” That background as both a writer and performer clearly showed in how tightly constructed his presenting bit ended up being, weaving multiple punchlines into a single smooth routine without ever losing the room.

For a ceremony packed with history-making wins and emotional speeches, it says something that a two-minute presenter segment managed to become one of the most shared moments of the entire night. Mulaney didn’t need a trophy to walk away as one of the evening’s biggest winners.
