‘Big Little Lies’ Star Shailene Woodley’s Bold Balenciaga Emmys Look Splits the Internet Right Down the Middle
Red carpet fashion has always been a bit of a gamble, and few things generate quite as much online chatter as a celebrity showing up in something nobody saw coming. This year’s Emmys delivered exactly that kind of moment, with one particular look dominating fashion conversations well before the ceremony even started.
Shailene Woodley made her return to the Emmys red carpet for the first time in nearly a decade, arriving at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards fresh off her first-ever Creative Arts Emmy win for Hulu’s ‘Paradise.’ Given her long absence from the event, all eyes were already on what she’d choose to wear for the occasion.
What she ultimately stepped out in ended up dividing fans almost immediately. Woodley wore a Balenciaga Couture ensemble designed by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, featuring a plunging periwinkle halter top paired with wide-leg gold trousers covered in crystals and sequins, finished off with burgundy opera gloves reaching past her elbows and a colorful gemstone necklace from Howl Jewelry.
The outfit itself wasn’t entirely new. The same combination first debuted on Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 2026 runway back in July, though it was originally paired with a heavy black hooded cloak that gave the ensemble a much darker, more dramatic edge. Woodley swapped that cloak out for the gloves and jewelry instead, softening the look’s severity into something noticeably more colorful.
That swap became the center of a wave of divided online reactions. One commenter on Vanity Fair’s coverage simply asked, “What in the kitchen gloves arts & crafts is going on here?” while another user on X wrote, “I have questions. A lot of them.”

The reactions didn’t stop there. Some social media users compared the outfit to a “randomized Sim” character or a child’s Halloween costume attempt, with one particularly blunt comment reading, “This is the outfit a toddler wears after throwing a tantrum all morning, and their parents gave up.” Others pushed back on the criticism entirely, with one fan writing, “Omg I think this outfit is fun!”
Despite the split reaction, Woodley left the ceremony with more than just fashion headlines to talk about. She won the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Annie, a former Graceland tour guide, in ‘Paradise,’ marking a genuinely strong night for the actress on top of the outfit buzz.

Woodley later swapped out the polarizing ensemble entirely while attending an after-party, throwing a graphic T-shirt over the Balenciaga look for a more relaxed evening out. The gesture offered a lighthearted coda to what had already become one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the entire ceremony.
For an actress who spent years largely out of the red carpet spotlight, choosing an outfit built to spark conversation rather than universal praise feels almost fitting. Whether fans loved it or hated it, Woodley’s Emmys look accomplished exactly what bold fashion choices are meant to do: get people talking.
