Charlize Theron’s Clea Reportedly Sneaking Back Into the MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios has spent years quietly building toward its next major crossover event, and few dangling threads have generated as much speculation as one particular post-credits reveal from 2022. Fans have been piecing together clues ever since, waiting to see if one of the Multiverse Saga’s most intriguing new characters would finally get her moment back in the spotlight.

That character is Clea, played by Charlize Theron, who made her MCU debut in the mid-credits scene of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Her brief but memorable introduction, warning Doctor Strange about the incursion his choices had triggered before pulling him through a portal to the Dark Dimension, immediately signaled that Marvel had bigger plans for the character down the line.

Now a new report suggests those plans may finally be coming into focus. Theron is reportedly set to return as Clea in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with the update attributed to industry insider Daniel Richtman, a frequent source of Marvel production leaks throughout the film’s lengthy shoot.

This isn’t the first time Theron’s involvement in the massive ensemble project has been floated. Speculation about Clea’s return dates back to early 2025, when multiple industry sources suggested both Theron and Benedict Cumberbatch could be part of the film, even though neither actor appeared on Marvel’s initial cast announcement of more than twenty-five names.

Writer Michael Waldron, who helped bring Clea into the MCU, spoke about the character’s significance back when ‘Multiverse of Madness’ first released, explaining, “We were really excited to introduce Clea. Getting Charlize Theron to play that character, holy crap,” according to comments shared with GeekTyrant. He went on to describe Clea as Doctor Strange’s great love in the comics, hinting at the kind of long-term storyline Marvel had in mind for the pairing.

Theron herself has remained characteristically tight-lipped about the rumors whenever they’ve come up in interviews. Speaking with Elle during press for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ she addressed the ongoing Clea speculation by simply saying she was “not the person to ask” when directly questioned about her potential involvement in ‘Doomsday.’

Clea’s connection to the Dark Dimension and the mystical side of the Marvel universe makes her a natural fit for a story built around multiversal collisions and incursions. In the comics, Clea is the niece of the villain Dormammu and eventually becomes deeply intertwined with Doctor Strange’s own story, a dynamic that would give ‘Doomsday’ plenty to explore if the character does end up appearing.

Given that Marvel has kept both Theron and Cumberbatch off official cast lists despite mounting rumors, it’s worth noting that this remains unconfirmed speculation rather than a studio announcement. Marvel has a well-documented history of guarding its biggest surprises closely, and cast reveals for major crossover events routinely stay under wraps until the last possible moment.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shaping up to be one of the most ambitious crossovers in the franchise’s history, adding a character as mystically connected as Clea would fit neatly into the film’s multiverse-spanning stakes. Whether Theron’s involvement gets officially confirmed before release remains to be seen, but the persistent rumors alone suggest Marvel may finally be ready to pay off Clea’s long-teased storyline.
