Jason Statham’s Box Office Disaster Gets a Second Life as Amazon’s No. 1 Movie

Action stars have long understood that a rocky theatrical run doesn’t necessarily spell doom for a movie’s long-term prospects. Streaming and digital rentals have become an increasingly important second life for mid-budget genre films, and sometimes that second act ends up telling a very different story than the one at the box office.

Jason Statham has had a particularly rough stretch at theaters throughout 2026, with two consecutive releases failing to recoup their production budgets during their theatrical windows. That pattern continued with his latest film, a contained action thriller that struggled to find an audience once it hit theaters back in August.

Now that same film is enjoying a genuine second wind. ‘Mutiny’ has climbed to No. 1 on Amazon’s video-on-demand chart, rebounding from a theatrical run that petered out somewhere between $21.9 million and $28 million worldwide against a reported $40 million budget.

‘Mutiny’ follows Statham as a billionaire’s head of security who uncovers a conspiracy aboard a cargo ship after being framed for his employer’s murder. The film opened in theaters on August 21, 2026, bringing in $7.71 million from 2,703 North American theaters for a sixth-place domestic finish, before dropping sharply in its following weekends.

Part of the film’s struggles came down to sheer misfortune rather than audience rejection. The movie accidentally appeared on Prime Video for several hours before its official release, an error that was followed by piracy and reportedly hurt the film’s performance in overseas markets, according to Collider’s coverage of the film’s box office trajectory.

By the time its theatrical run wound down, ‘Mutiny’ had grossed roughly $15.2 million domestically and $6.6 million internationally. Lionsgate ultimately pushed the film to premium VOD less than a month after its theatrical debut, a notably quick turnaround that set up its current streaming success.

This marks Statham’s second underperforming theatrical release of 2026, following January’s ‘Shelter,’ which earned roughly $54.6 million worldwide against a reported $50 million budget. That earlier film also struggled to match the success of 2024’s ‘The Beekeeper,’ which brought in around $162 million globally and remains one of Statham’s strongest recent theatrical hits.

Despite the rocky box office numbers, ‘Mutiny’ has found a more receptive audience once viewers actually watched it. The film currently holds a 5.7 rating on IMDb, while Rotten Tomatoes shows a considerably stronger 86 percent audience score against a 50 percent critics rating, with fans largely embracing Statham’s straightforward action presence and the movie’s bursts of intensity.

This pattern of theatrical underperformance followed by streaming success has become something of a signature for Statham’s recent output, with films like ‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ following a similar trajectory in the past. For an actor whose audience increasingly seems to prefer catching these mid-budget thrillers from the comfort of home rather than in theaters, ‘Mutiny’s’ climb to the top of Amazon’s charts suggests his built-in fanbase remains as loyal as ever, even if box office numbers no longer tell the whole story.

What do you think of Mutiny becoming Amazon's No. 1 movie after bombing in theaters?
