‘Slow Horses’ Season 8 Confirmed Following Emmy Win for Outstanding Directing

Now Apple TV has confirmed the show’s future well beyond that. ‘Slow Horses’ has officially been renewed for an eighth season, with the six-episode run adapted from “Clown Town,” the ninth book in Mick Herron’s “Slough House” series, and Gary Oldman returning once again as the irascible Jackson Lamb.

This latest renewal continues a pattern that’s defined the show’s entire run, with Apple consistently greenlighting new seasons well before the current one even premieres. Season 7 was announced before season 5 had aired, and that installment, adapted from the eighth novel in Herron’s series, is set to premiere on Apple TV this Wednesday, continuing the franchise’s rare feat of delivering a new season almost every single year since its debut.

Oldman himself has spoken about the show’s staying power in previous interviews, telling TV Insider that what keeps him coming back is the strength of Herron’s source material, noting that having the books as a template means the writers’ room never finds itself scrambling for a direction each season. That confidence in the underlying novels has clearly paid off, with the show continuing to earn both critical praise and awards recognition well into its later seasons.

‘Clown Town’ itself was published back in September 2025, giving the show’s writing team a fresh book to adapt almost immediately after its release. Herron has continued writing at a pace that’s comfortably kept ahead of the show’s production schedule, ensuring Apple has source material ready well before each new season needs to start filming.

The series follows the “losers, misfits and boozers” of Slough House, a dumping ground within MI5 for disgraced agents who’ve made career-ending mistakes but haven’t done anything quite bad enough to warrant outright termination. Under Jackson Lamb’s famously abrasive leadership, this ragtag team routinely finds itself stumbling into high-stakes espionage plots despite, or perhaps because of, their collective incompetence.

Apple TV+ Europe’s creative director, Jay Hunt, has previously praised the show’s ability to blend self-deprecating British humor with genuine action-thriller stakes, a formula that’s clearly continued resonating with both audiences and awards voters. With season 6 having already earned Rotten Tomatoes’ distinction as the top-rated series of its release year, the franchise shows no signs of losing steam as it heads deeper into its run.
