Hollywood couples who manage to keep their relationships largely out of the spotlight tend to generate an especially strong reaction when news of a split finally surfaces. Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski built exactly that kind of low-key partnership over the better part of a decade, rarely inviting cameras into their family life even as both continued building substantial careers.

The two first crossed paths back in 2015 while starring together in the off-Broadway production “The Way We Get By,” later reuniting that same year to play love interests in the film “The Last Word.” Their relationship turned romantic not long after, and the couple went on to elope in a private wedding in early 2017, with Seyfried pregnant with their first child at the time.

Now, after nine years of marriage, the couple has confirmed they’re calling it quits. Seyfried and Sadoski announced their split in a joint statement provided to PEOPLE, revealing that they had actually been separated for some time before going public with the news.

The couple’s announcement leaned heavily into a sense of mutual peace rather than public conflict. “We have been separated for a while, and it’s proven to be the right move for us and our family unit. We’ve got each other forever — and it’s GOOD,” they wrote in their statement. That framing echoed the low-drama, privacy-focused approach the two had maintained throughout their entire relationship.

Seyfried and Sadoski share two children together: daughter Nina, who was born just days after their 2017 wedding and is now nine years old, and son Thomas Jr., who turns six later this month. Throughout their marriage, both actors consistently kept their family life largely shielded from public attention, rarely discussing their children or home life in interviews.

Despite that privacy, the two occasionally acknowledged each other publicly in career moments. Seyfried thanked Sadoski during her 2022 Emmy acceptance speech after winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for “The Dropout,” while Sadoski had previously described her, shortly after their wedding, as the person he loved, admired, and respected most in the world.

Sadoski, known for his role on HBO’s “The Newsroom,” and Seyfried, whose recent credits include Apple TV’s “The Crowded Room” and Peacock’s “Long Bright River,” both continued building substantial individual careers throughout their marriage. At the time their separation became public, Seyfried had several major projects on her plate, including “The Testament of Ann Lee,” “The Housemaid,” and her ongoing series work.

Beyond their professional lives, the couple had also shared a history of supporting charitable causes together, including efforts focused on children affected by conflict, another thread that ran quietly alongside their public personas as working actors raising a young family.

For two performers who managed to keep such a significant relationship largely private for nearly a decade, this announcement offers a rare, direct glimpse into a chapter of their lives usually kept well outside the public eye. With both stressing the amicable nature of their decision, Seyfried and Sadoski appear focused on moving forward as co-parents rather than dwelling on the split itself.
