HBO Confirms ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Will Finally Return in Early 2027

Westeros fans have grown accustomed to lengthy waits between seasons of their favorite shows, with ‘House of the Dragon’ famously taking years between installments. HBO’s newest addition to the franchise, however, has been positioning itself as something different from the start, a series built around a tighter, more sustainable annual release rhythm.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ made a strong first impression when it debuted in January 2026, following Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg through George R.R. Martin’s beloved “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas. HBO was so confident in the show’s potential that the network greenlit a second season back in November 2025, months before the first episode even aired.

That confidence has now translated into a firm timeline. HBO head Casey Bloys confirmed to Deadline that ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 will release in the first half of 2027, keeping the franchise on the annual release schedule the network has committed to maintaining for its Westeros properties.

Getting to this confirmed window wasn’t entirely smooth. Filming, which began back in December 2025, hit a significant snag when historic rainfall in Gran Canaria, Spain, caused severe flooding that submerged production sets at the Las Niñas Dam, forcing the crew to relocate to mainland Spain and other filming locations. Showrunner Ira Parker had originally targeted a June 2026 wrap date, but the “once-in-a-100-year storm” pushed that timeline back by roughly two months.

Despite those setbacks, Parker remained confident the delays wouldn’t derail the season’s overall release window. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he stated the season would “absolutely” debut in the first half of 2027, emphasizing that the production’s smaller scale compared to ‘House of the Dragon’ gives the team more flexibility to recover from unexpected disruptions. Filming eventually wrapped in mid-August, with young star Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg, sharing on social media that he’d officially completed his portion of the shoot.

That smaller scale has become one of the show’s defining advantages within HBO’s broader Westeros strategy. Without dragons requiring extensive visual effects work, and with shorter episode runtimes ranging between 31 and 42 minutes, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ simply requires less post-production time than its dragon-heavy predecessors, allowing HBO to realistically sustain a yearly release cadence.

Season 2 will adapt “The Sworn Sword,” the second novella in Martin’s Dunk and Egg trilogy, picking up roughly a year and a half after the events of Season 1’s “The Hedge Knight” adaptation. The story follows the pair into the Reach, where they enter the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey and become entangled in what initially appears to be a simple property dispute before unraveling into something tied to the lingering fallout of the Blackfyre Rebellion.

Parker has described the season’s central theme as loyalty, and specifically the dangers of blind loyalty, offering a notable tonal shift from Season 1’s father-and-son framework. The new season will also introduce fresh cast members, including Lucy Boynton, Babou Ceesay, and Peter Mullan, expanding the show’s ensemble as the story’s stakes grow more complex.

With ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 slated for mid-2026 and this new confirmation locking in an early 2027 window for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ HBO appears determined to keep its Westeros pipeline running continuously for the foreseeable future. For fans still processing Season 1’s emotional first chapter, that annual rhythm means Dunk and Egg’s next adventure isn’t nearly as far off as it might feel.
