BookTok adaptations have become one of the most anticipated corners of streaming right now, and few upcoming releases have generated quite as much buzz as this particular fan-favorite romance finally making its way to screens. After months of teasers, filming updates, and viral trailer moments, one of the platform’s most beloved recent romance novels is just days away from its official debut.

‘The Love Hypothesis,’ based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, has been building anticipation since Prime Video first confirmed its September 23 release date back in June, with star Lili Reinhart keeping fans engaged throughout production via frequent behind-the-scenes TikToks. That excitement reached a new peak this week as the film’s cast stepped out for its official red carpet moment.

Reinhart turned heads at ‘The Love Hypothesis’ New York premiere in a striking pink and green floral gown, complete with a dramatic train and delicate beaded detailing throughout the bodice and skirt. The look offered fans their first proper glimpse of Reinhart in full press mode for a role that’s already generated significant online chatter.

The film adapts Hazelwood’s viral novel, following Olive Smith, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate played by Reinhart, whose impulsive decision to kiss intimidating professor Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman, to convince her best friend she’s moved on spirals into a fake relationship built around rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial arrangement. That premise quickly complicates both their professional and personal lives as the lines between pretend and genuine feelings start to blur.

Directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild, the film also stars Rachel Marsh as Olive’s best friend Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay as her crush Jeremy, along with Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan rounding out the supporting cast. Notably, this marks the first-ever on-screen adaptation of any of Hazelwood’s novels, adding extra weight to how the finished film ultimately translates the source material’s devoted fanbase into a new streaming audience.

Prime Video has leaned heavily into the film’s BookTok origins throughout its marketing rollout, including a playful promotional video that showed Reinhart ordering a coffee with extra sprinkles while a cup displaying “9.23” teased the release date. That cheeky approach to promotion has continued building momentum as the film’s full trailer, which dropped August 26, generated significant online buzz over the on-screen chemistry between Reinhart and Bateman.

Despite hopes from some fans that the film might get a theatrical run given the massive popularity of its source material, ‘The Love Hypothesis’ is heading straight to streaming, premiering exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. That global day-and-date release strategy reflects Prime Video’s broader approach to high-profile book adaptations throughout 2026, positioning the film alongside other romance and BookTok-adjacent projects the streamer has rolled out this year.

With the premiere now behind them and the official streaming debut arriving September 23, cast members Reinhart and Bateman have spent recent weeks making the rounds promoting the film, including an earlier appearance together at Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest back in June. For a novel that’s spent years topping BookTok recommendation lists, this red carpet moment offers fans their clearest sign yet that Olive and Adam’s story is finally ready for its close-up.
