Nielsen Just Sped Up Its Streaming Reports, and ‘Reacher’ Is Winning the New Faster Race
Streaming ratings have always operated on a delay that made them feel slightly out of step with the shows people were actually talking about in real time. For years, Nielsen’s Top 10 charts arrived a full month after the viewing window they covered, leaving audiences and industry insiders alike waiting weeks to see how a buzzy premiere actually performed.
That gap is now shrinking in a meaningful way. Nielsen has overhauled its reporting timeline for streaming’s biggest measurement charts, and the first results under the new system reveal exactly which shows dominated the closing weeks of summer.
Nielsen has shortened its streaming ratings reporting process from four weeks to two, and released three weeks of catch-up data covering August 17 through September 6 as a result of the transition. The numbers show Prime Video’s “Reacher” leading the pack for two of those three weeks, with Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and Tyler Perry’s “Beauty in Black” trading places at the top throughout the stretch.
“Reacher” kicked off the window in dominant fashion, pulling in 1.5 billion minutes watched during the week of August 17 following the August 12 premiere of its fourth season starring Alan Ritchson. That momentum dipped the following week slightly to 1.45 billion minutes, allowing two Netflix titles to briefly overtake it.

During the week of August 24, “Outer Banks,” which released its fifth and final season on August 20, climbed from 1.46 billion to 1.49 billion minutes, edging past “Reacher” into the No. 1 position. Perry’s “Beauty in Black” matched “Reacher’s” 1.45 billion minutes that same week, creating a tightly packed race at the top of the chart.
“Reacher” reclaimed the No. 1 spot during the week of August 31, even as its own viewership dropped to 1.25 billion minutes, marking the show’s third time atop the chart since its fourth season debuted. “Beauty in Black” trailed close behind at 1.06 billion minutes, narrowly edged out of the runner-up position by an unexpected contender: HBO Max’s “The Big Bang Theory,” which posted 1.07 billion minutes that week. “Outer Banks,” meanwhile, slid down to No. 8 on the overall streaming list with 762 million minutes.

The faster reporting window also gave two notable new releases their first shot at chart visibility. HBO’s “Lanterns” made its debut on the acquired titles chart during the week of August 31, following its August 16 launch, scoring 500 million minutes and landing at No. 8 on that particular list.
Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” also made a strong showing after its Season 2 premiere on September 3, pulling in 722 million minutes and landing at No. 7 among the week’s most-watched streaming originals. That kind of immediate chart placement for a newly released season underscores just how quickly the accelerated reporting timeline is now capturing viewership trends.

By cutting its reporting delay in half, Nielsen is positioning itself to offer a more timely picture of streaming’s competitive landscape, one that better reflects actual viewing habits as they happen rather than weeks after the cultural conversation has already moved on. For an industry increasingly driven by real-time buzz and rapid content turnover, that shift could meaningfully change how networks and streamers track their own success going forward.
