Paul Bettany’s Coy Answer About Elizabeth Olsen’s ‘VisionQuest’ Return Has Fans Convinced Something’s Coming

Marvel fans have never fully accepted Wanda Maximoff’s fate after “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” buried her beneath a collapsing mountain, and speculation about her eventual return has followed nearly every MCU project since. That speculation intensifies whenever a former “WandaVision” cast member sits down for a press interview, and Paul Bettany’s latest round of promotion for his upcoming solo series was no exception.

Bettany has spent the past several weeks teasing details about “VisionQuest,” the eight-episode Disney+ series following his character’s journey to reclaim his identity after the events of “WandaVision.” With James Spader returning as Ultron and Ruaridh Mollica joining the cast as Wanda and Vision’s son Tommy, anticipation for the show has been building steadily, but nothing has generated quite as much buzz as one particular question about Elizabeth Olsen.

When asked directly whether Olsen might pop up as Wanda Maximoff in “VisionQuest,” Bettany avoided giving a straightforward answer in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, describing her potential involvement as a matter of secrecy that even he isn’t fully privy to. Rather than shutting down the possibility, Bettany hinted at additional surprises and major reveals still to come, along with confirming a substantial number of Easter eggs and cameos from other MCU stars throughout the season.

That kind of deliberately vague response has been enough to send fan speculation into overdrive, with many online now convinced Bettany’s careful phrasing all but confirms Olsen has some role in the show, even if the details remain tightly guarded. Given how frequently Marvel Studios has used surprise cameos to close out its Disney+ series in recent years, the theory isn’t without precedent.

According to earlier comments from Bettany, showrunner Terry Matalas built “VisionQuest” around the idea that Marvel benefits from taking genuine creative risks, framing the series as the story of an outsider trying to understand who he really is. Bettany has described Vision as a character built for anyone who ever felt like an outsider growing up, giving the show a more introspective angle compared to typical franchise fare.

Bettany has also spoken enthusiastically about James Spader’s return as Ultron, calling the actor’s performance in the role “delicious” and signaling that the villain’s presence will be a significant part of the season’s larger narrative. That combination of Vision’s identity journey and Ultron’s return gives the show plenty of narrative ground to cover before any potential Wanda appearance would even come into play.

Interestingly, Olsen’s own comments about the project suggest she may know just as little as fans do. Speaking to Inverse at the premiere of her film “Eternity,” Olsen said she knew almost nothing about “VisionQuest” until recently reconnecting with Bettany, adding that he seemed genuinely proud of the project despite her limited knowledge of its actual content.

That disconnect between the two former co-stars only adds another layer of uncertainty to the ongoing speculation, suggesting that even the people closest to the production are being kept largely in the dark about how far the show’s surprises will extend. Whether that secrecy is protecting an actual Wanda cameo or simply generating buzz around unrelated reveals remains genuinely unclear.

With “VisionQuest” continuing its promotional rollout ahead of its Disney+ debut, Bettany’s carefully worded non-answer has become one of the more talked-about moments of the show’s press cycle so far. Given Marvel’s track record of surprise reveals, fans clearly aren’t ready to rule anything out.
