‘The Mandalorian’ Star Giancarlo Esposito Says He’d Rather Play Magneto Than the X-Men Role Fans Keep Casting Him In

For years, Marvel fans have been photoshopping one particular actor into a wheelchair, convinced they’d found the perfect on-screen version of one of the X-Men’s most iconic mentors. That fan-driven campaign eventually grew loud enough that Giancarlo Esposito himself started addressing it in interviews, even expressing genuine enthusiasm for the role at various points along the way.

Esposito made his actual MCU debut in 2025’s “Captain America: Brave New World” as the villainous Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder, leader of the Serpent Society. That casting didn’t stop the ongoing conversation about which mutant role might suit him best, especially with Marvel now actively building out its live-action “X-Men” reboot.

Speaking with Polygon ahead of the Season 2 premiere of “The Gentlemen,” Esposito directly addressed the long-running Professor X speculation for the first time in detail. “Professor X, just to be clear, was a fan casting idea that got spread very quickly, and it was an idea that appealed to me because of who Professor X is,” he explained, making clear the concept originated with fans rather than any actual industry conversation.

Rather than reaffirming his interest in Charles Xavier, Esposito used the interview to name the character he’d actually prefer to play. “I like Magneto. I like that world. That world has its own rhythm to it that is fantastical in some ways,” he said. He didn’t stop there, also naming a DC villain as a dream role: “Freeze is another one that I would like to be.”

That shift in preference lines up with comments Esposito made in an earlier interview with ComicBook.com, where he acknowledged the Professor X rumors while also noting that Magneto and Mr. Freeze had both been floated as possibilities during conversations about his future in comic book adaptations. Across multiple interviews, Esposito has consistently gravitated toward characters carrying more moral complexity or outright villainy than Xavier’s more straightforwardly heroic role.

Any lingering hope that Esposito might still land the Professor X role has already been settled by Marvel’s own casting decisions. Christopher Abbott has been confirmed as Charles Xavier in the studio’s upcoming “X-Men” reboot, closing the door on years of fan speculation surrounding Esposito.

Notably, Marvel has not yet announced who will play Magneto in that same reboot, leaving the role Esposito says he’d actually prefer to play as one of the few major mutant characters still open for casting. Given his stated enthusiasm for the part, that gap hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans eager to see him land a role that fits his stated preferences rather than the one internet casting campaigns originally pushed for him.

Esposito’s comments also touched on his existing MCU role, revealing he felt there was more story left untold with Seth Voelker’s background as a scientist-turned-villain. “There’s a story there which I didn’t have the ability to tell in what I had to do in Captain America 4,” he said, suggesting he’d welcome the chance to further explore that character if given the opportunity.

Between his stated interest in Magneto, his lingering curiosity about expanding Sidewinder’s story, and his openly acknowledged desire to eventually play Mr. Freeze in a DC project, Esposito has made clear his comic book ambitions extend well beyond the role fans originally imagined for him.
