‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Won’t Quit: Sony’s Web-Slinger Keeps Swinging at the Box Office

Few blockbusters get to rewrite the record books once, and fewer still keep doing it weeks after opening night. The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ box office run has become one of the defining stories of the summer, and it isn’t fading quietly. Destin Daniel Cretton’s film, which stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, launched in theaters on July 31.

The start was enormous. The film earned $360 million domestically in its opening weekend, the biggest debut of all time, as part of a $932 million global launch. After the final numbers came in, it finished nearly $3 million ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the opening-weekend crown.

Blockbusters usually fade fast after a start like that, but this one has kept its grip on audiences. It held the No. 1 spot domestically for six consecutive weekends. That brings us to the latest numbers.

According to a post on X from box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the film grossed $1.5 million on its 8th Friday. That is a drop of just 23.5% from the previous Friday, even though it lost 286 theatres in the process. It arrives at its 8th weekend still playing in more than 3,000 theatres, which is a rare luxury in the current theatrical landscape.

The cumulative total now stands at $939.5 million domestically. That puts it $112 million ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at the same point in its run, despite starting only $3 million ahead. Fernando projects a 3-day weekend of $4.5 million to $5.5 million.

The milestone behind those numbers is a big one. The film became the biggest release in US box office history in just 47 days, passing the $936.66 million that ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ collected over 168 days. ‘Endgame’ had fallen short of that mark with $858 million, so the record long looked out of reach.

There is an important caveat, though. These are unadjusted figures, and ‘The Force Awakens’ would be worth about $1.32 billion today after 11 years of inflation. Even so, the raw achievement is hard to dismiss.

The success has also lifted the whole industry. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was the only other hot title in August besides ‘The Odyssey’, helping push that month to an all-time high of $1.2 billion.

The global picture is just as strong. Its worldwide total is above $2.45 billion, which ranks third all time behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’, and it is unlikely to pass either. That still makes it the biggest Sony release ever, and one of the biggest films the industry has produced.

The reign at the top may not last long, however. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has a good chance of posting an even bigger opening than the $360 million of ‘Brand New Day’, although crowded holiday competition such as ‘Dune: Part Three’ could limit its screen time. Whether that happens or not, Peter Parker’s latest outing has already secured its place in box office history.

Its slow, steady decline now looks as impressive as its explosive opening. Holding more than 3,000 theatres into an 8th weekend suggests audiences are still turning up, and a few more small weekends could keep pushing the total higher. Where this run finally lands is anyone’s guess.
