Hollywood galas are usually about the guest list, but every so often the setting steals the show. The opening of George Lucas’s new museum in Los Angeles delivered both, with a crowd of A-listers wandering through galleries packed with ‘Star Wars’ history. One photo from that night is now getting a lot of attention online.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art held its opening gala on September 19, ahead of its public debut on September 22. Event co-chairs included Steven Spielberg, Greta Gerwig, Guillermo del Toro, Pharrell Williams and Lewis Hamilton, while Queen Latifah took the stage to welcome guests. Among the crowd were Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Christopher Nolan, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey and dozens of other stars.

The museum itself is a $1 billion project, founded by Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, and designed by architect Ma Yansong. Construction began in March 2018 on an 11-acre site in Exposition Park. The five-story, 300,000-square-foot building houses art from Norman Rockwell to Frida Kahlo, along with the Lucas Archives.

Now one gala moment has taken on a life of its own. Star Wars Holocron shared a photo on X on September 20, showing Sofía Vergara standing with the Anakin and Obi-Wan display at the museum. The post has drawn 21.6K views, 1.3K likes, and 50 reposts, and shows the actress in a shimmering red gown in front of the exhibit.

The setting is part of the museum’s inaugural cinema installation, ‘Star Wars in Motion’. It was reported that the exhibition focuses on land vehicles from the first 6 films, including racers, transports, and flying vessels. The Vergara photo shows a yellow airspeeder carrying figures of the two Jedi, set against a dark backdrop.

One review noted that 2 finned airspeeders from ‘Attack of the Clones’ appear to be tailgating each other, set against blurry freeze frames that suggest motion. The idea is to capture speed and momentum in a static gallery. It is a smart way to make vehicles from a galaxy far, far away feel dynamic.

The exhibition draws on the Lucas Archives, a collection of props, costumes and artwork donated in 2013 that forms the foundation of the museum. Lucas and Hobson are betting that fans who come for the vehicles and sculptures of Yoda and Grogu will stay to see the rest of the collection. That approach seems designed to introduce a wider audience to the museum’s broader mission.

Reaction to the photo has been playful. One fan reply riffed on a famous ‘Star Wars’ line about Anakin and power couplings, joking that Vergara looked electric next to the display. Others simply praised the look and the setting.

The moment fits a pattern from the weekend. Earlier, Samuel L. Jackson did a double take beside a figure of Mace Windu, and Mark Hamill posed with a life-sized Luke Skywalker. Together, those photos show how much fun the guests had among the exhibits.

Vergara was among the celebrities who attended alongside Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria and Tyler Perry. The night mixed film royalty, musicians, athletes and fashion names in one room. That made a photo with a famous ‘Star Wars’ display feel especially fitting.

With the celebrity party over, the museum now turns to everyday visitors. The public opening arrives on September 22, and the true test will be whether ordinary fans respond as warmly as the gala crowd. Based on the first images, the museum has already made a memorable impression.
