‘Ponies’ Star Emilia Clarke’s New Pictures Are Racking up Attention After Her Viral Emmys Moment

Few actors have been tied to a single role as tightly as Emilia Clarke has to Daenerys Targaryen. Clarke played the character throughout all 8 seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’ and earned 4 Emmy nominations for the part. Years after the finale, the goodwill around her hasn’t really dimmed.

That made this year’s Emmy Awards feel a bit like a homecoming. Clarke joined Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon’, on stage to present Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. D’Arcy opened the bit by framing the two as Targaryen relatives and announcing that Clarke would speak to the crowd in High Valyrian.

Clarke delivered the line live on television to immediate applause, and D’Arcy then revealed it simply meant good evening. The deadpan translation only added to the fun, and the clip kept circulating online. It was the kind of crossover moment franchise fans had waited years to see.

Now a fresh wave of attention is coming from a much quieter kind of post. In the images, Clarke has her hair pulled back and wears a chunky beaded necklace over a herringbone-patterned jacket.

The replies lean warm and nostalgic. One user described her as sunshiny and said it’s hard not to smile along when she does. Another pointed straight back to her Emmy’s appearance, saying her High Valyrian welcome to the audience was hugely entertaining.

Cameras also caught ‘Game of Thrones’ co-creator David Benioff watching from the audience, which tied the bit back to the original creative team.

The language itself has a bit of behind-the-scenes history, too. High Valyrian is a constructed language that linguist David J. Peterson created specifically for the HBO fantasy adaptations. Peterson praised Clarke’s High Valyrian in a 2013 blog post, saying she speaks it like a native even if she occasionally missed a word.

There is also some poetic justice in the Emmys setting. Clarke lost 3 Emmy bids before the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale even aired, a stretch that pushed her to rethink what success meant.
