Callina Liang’s Battle-Worn Chun-Li Look Gets a New ‘Street Fighter’ Behind-The-Scenes Peek
Few video game characters carry as much expectation as Chun-Li. She first appeared in ‘Street Fighter II: The World Warrior’ in 1991 and is the first female playable character in a fighting game to gain mainstream recognition. Any actress who steps into that blue outfit inherits three decades of fan scrutiny.
Live-action Chun-Li has been tried before, with mixed results. Ming-Na Wen played her in the 1990s ‘Street Fighter’ film, and Kristin Kreuk starred in ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li’. That 2009 movie leaned on an origin story in which a young Chun-Li watches M. Bison’s henchmen abduct her father. Now Legendary’s reboot is trying to get the character right, and a new image from the set has fans talking.
What stands out is how lived-in the costume looks. The blue outfit is scuffed and torn, and dirt and marks streak across her arms, which suggests the character is deep into a fight rather than posing for a poster. It is a small detail, but it fits the tone of the film’s marketing so far.
That tone was on display in the first trailer. The footage showed Liang in Chun-Li’s blue suit with buns, along with several shots of her looking worn out while performing blue-lit combat moves. The trailer also drew heavy discussion online, with much of the conversation centered on Liang’s performance.
The photo also lands well after the cameras stopped rolling. Principal photography began in August 2025 and ended in November. That makes this a fresh look at a shoot that wrapped last year, and a sign that the promotional push is ramping up.
Liang has been the face of that push for a while. She was cast as Chun-Li in June 2025, and reports since then have focused on how she prepared for the role. She reportedly trained two hours a day in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and wushu, ate 12 eggs a day while bulking, and studied game footage on PS5 to nail the moves.

Her fellow cast members give the film plenty of star power. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo is Ken Masters, David Dastmalchian is M. Bison, and Roman Reigns plays Akuma. Jason Momoa is also part of the cast. Kitao Sakurai directed after the Philippou brothers exited the project.
Studio marketing has been steady in recent weeks. The global World Warrior Tour launched the film with a first preview on the Shinjuku Yunika Vision screens in Tokyo. Liang also appeared in new photos from a tour stop in Japan earlier this month, wearing a blue spiked outfit and the character’s buns.

With the movie set to reach theaters on Oct. 16, the release is only 25 days away. Expect more set photos, tour appearances, and promotional material between now and then. For fans still deciding whether this Chun-Li can live up to the games, every new image is another piece of evidence.
