Kit Harington Reveals His Instant Reaction To Joining HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series

Casting swaps are part of the drama that comes with any big franchise reboot, and HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series has already had one. The show hasn’t even premiered, yet one of its most colorful roles has changed hands. That makes the actor who ended up with it a natural person to hear from.

Nicholas Hoult was first announced as Gilderoy Lockhart on Aug 11. About two weeks later, the show’s official Instagram account revealed that Kit Harington would step into the role instead, due to scheduling conflicts. Hoult’s Lockhart scenes had reportedly been moved earlier in the production schedule, and he couldn’t make it work.

Now Harington is opening up about how he felt when the call came. In a Variety post highlighting his appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused‘ podcast, the ‘Game of Thrones’ star described signing on as a “very simple ‘Yes, please!'” He also said he thinks the series is a brilliant idea and that he believes it can delve further into the story than the films did.

For Harington, the role is a familiar one. He voiced Lockhart in the full-cast Audible audiobook edition of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ released in December 2025. That gives him a rare chance to play the same character in two very different formats.

He is also a genuine fan of the books. Harington has described himself as a big book nerd who grew up reading the novels as they came out. He has said he knows the books like the back of his hand and has used the audiobooks as a sleep aid for years.

The part carries big shoes to fill. Kenneth Branagh played the vain, celebrity-author professor in the 2002 film ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’ Season 2 of the HBO series adapts that same book, with production set to shoot this fall.

Season 1 arrives first, premiering on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day. The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, alongside John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The series is structured as a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s novels, with each season adapting one book.

The project has not been without controversy. Harington has spoken about joining the show amid debate over author J.K. Rowling and the decision to reboot a beloved film series for television. His comments this week suggest he is not letting any of that dampen his enthusiasm.

The same podcast appearance also produced Jon Snow news. Harington said he feels more comfortable with the idea of reprising his ‘Game of Thrones’ role than he did in the past. That follows a Snow spinoff sequel that HBO developed several years ago and later shelved.

Between the recast and the year-end premiere, HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ is already generating plenty of conversation. Harington’s reaction is a good sign for a role that has drawn attention since the day it was announced. Fans will get to see how his Lockhart compares when Season 2 arrives.
