‘Neagley’ Just Did Something Almost No Spin-off Ever Manages: Beating Its Own Parent Show

Spin-offs have a notoriously rough track record when it comes to living up to the shows that spawned them. For every successful expansion, there are dozens that fade quietly into streaming obscurity, unable to capture the audience or critical goodwill of the original series they branched off from.

That made the arrival of Prime Video’s newest ‘Reacher‘ offshoot feel like a genuine gamble, even with a built-in audience already primed and waiting. Expanding a beloved action franchise beyond its central character is never a guaranteed win, no matter how strong the source material might be.

Just days after its debut, though, ‘Neagley’ has pulled off something remarkably rare: it has officially overtaken ‘Reacher’ Season 4 for the number one spot on Prime Video’s streaming charts. According to tracking site FlixPatrol, the spin-off claimed the top position on the platform’s global viewership rankings following its full-season release on September 16.

‘Neagley’ arrived with all eight episodes available at once, a notable contrast to ‘Reacher,’ which rolled out its fourth season weekly. That binge-friendly format allowed audiences to consume the entire mystery in one sitting, likely contributing to its rapid climb up the charts.

The series has also earned strong marks from critics, currently sitting at a Certified Fresh 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score in the mid-80s. That score has reportedly climbed since its review embargo lifted, moving from the low 80s among early reviews into the 90s as more critics weighed in, putting it within striking distance of Season 4’s 94 percent critical rating.

The spin-off shifts focus entirely to Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley, a former Army Master Sergeant from the 110th Special Investigations Unit who has since built a career as a private investigator in Chicago. Neagley is one of the few characters to have appeared across all four seasons of ‘Reacher,’ giving the character a built-in connection to the franchise’s existing fanbase.

In this new series, Neagley finds herself drawn into a dangerous conspiracy after a friend from her past turns up dead. Alan Ritchson does make two appearances throughout the season as Jack Reacher himself, but the story otherwise belongs entirely to Sten, who has received considerable praise for carrying the lead role.

Despite ‘Neagley’ claiming the top chart position, this isn’t really a story about ‘Reacher’ losing ground. Season 4 previously generated more than 5.5 billion minutes viewed in its first four weeks, according to Nielsen, and the flagship series has stayed above 90 percent with critics across every one of its four seasons.

Prime Video was confident enough in Season 4’s performance to renew ‘Reacher’ for a fifth season, which is already in production. That means fans won’t have to wait too long before Ritchson returns to the franchise’s central role, even as ‘Neagley’ continues building its own audience in the meantime.

Having a spin-off outperform its parent series, even temporarily, is a rare enough feat that it signals real appetite for expanding the ‘Reacher’ universe beyond its title character. It suggests Prime Video may have found a sustainable model for keeping the franchise active during gaps between ‘Reacher’ seasons.

Whether ‘Neagley’ gets a second season remains to be officially confirmed, but given its critical reception and chart performance so far, the odds appear to be in its favor. For a franchise built on one larger-than-life protagonist, proving it can thrive through someone else’s story is no small accomplishment.
