Jimmy Kimmel’s Emotional Emmys Moment Takes a Very Unexpected Turn With Matthew McConaughey

Award shows have a way of catching people off guard emotionally, even the ones running the show. Behind the polished monologues and perfectly timed jokes, hosts are still human beings processing real feelings in real time, sometimes in the least glamorous corners of the venue.

That’s exactly what happened to Jimmy Kimmel during this year’s Emmy Awards, though the story didn’t fully come out until days later, when Kimmel found himself sharing it live on his own show. What started as a genuinely emotional moment ended up turning into one of the more bizarre celebrity anecdotes of the fall season.

Appearing on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Monday night alongside Woody Harrelson, Kimmel revealed that Matthew McConaughey had comforted him with a hug in a men’s restroom at the September 14 ceremony, only for Kimmel to later realize McConaughey was, in his own words, exposed while embracing him. According to Kimmel, Harrelson then walked out of a nearby stall right in the middle of it all.

Kimmel explained that the moment stemmed from genuine grief. “My friend Cleto passed away, and it was in the montage, and I started getting choked up, and I went to the bathroom,” he recalled during the appearance. “I’m washing my hands, and I notice next to me — I mean, right next to me — Matthew McConaughey is at the urinal.”

According to Kimmel, McConaughey immediately noticed something was wrong. “He sees that I’m upset and he’s like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ And I told him what happened and he is again at the urinal, and he turns to me and he gives me a very nice hug — he hugs me very warmly.”

It’s what happened next that turned a tender moment into an unforgettable story. “I am hugging him for a little while, and I said, ‘Is your penis out?'” Kimmel recounted. “And he said, ‘Yes, it is. Yes it is.’ And he says, ‘In fact, I’m going to rub it up against you a little bit.'”

Kimmel noted that the comment ultimately helped lighten what had been a genuinely heavy moment, joking that Cleto “would have loved that very much.” It was right around that exchange that Harrelson happened to emerge from a nearby stall, catching the tail end of the interaction firsthand.

Rather than react with shock, Harrelson took the whole scene in stride when Kimmel asked whether McConaughey had explained the situation to him afterward. “I never try to grade or critique what other people are doing, and I figured you guys, whatever your thing is, I didn’t want to be the guy to say, ‘No, not in the restroom at the Emmys!'” Harrelson said.

He went on to reveal that he’d actually overheard enough of the conversation to understand what was really going on. “I did hear you say that you were upset, and that’s why afterwards we were all out in the hall and had a group hug. I’m sorry to hear about that.”

The timing of the anecdote wasn’t entirely coincidental. Harrelson’s appearance on the show came while promoting his and McConaughey’s upcoming Apple TV+ series ‘Brothers,’ giving the story an extra layer of promotional buzz as it quickly spread across entertainment outlets.

Given how much attention the exchange has already generated online, it seems likely fans will be bringing up “the penis-out hug” for a while, whether or not McConaughey himself ever weighs in with his own version of events.
