Brad Pitt’s Survival Drama ‘Heart of the Beast’ Is Earning Some of the Best Reviews of His Career

Brad Pitt has spent decades proving he can headline nearly any genre Hollywood throws at him, but even longtime fans might not have expected his next big swing to be a stripped-down survival story starring mostly him and a dog. After a summer defined by high-octane racing spectacle, Pitt’s latest project trades speed for something far more intimate and quiet.

That pivot has paid off in a big way. Ahead of its theatrical release this Friday, ‘Heart of the Beast’ has debuted to a near-perfect 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, marking one of the more surprising critical successes of the fall movie season.

Directed by David Ayer, the film follows James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer whose seaplane trip through the Alaskan wilderness takes a dangerous turn after he suffers a mid-flight heart attack. Stranded roughly 58 miles from the nearest road, Belmont and his battle-scarred combat dog, Odin, must fight to survive together against the harsh elements and dangerous wildlife.

Much of the critical enthusiasm has centered on just how different this project feels compared to the director’s usual output. Known for gritty urban thrillers like ‘The Beekeeper’ and ‘End of Watch,’ Ayer’s shift toward a wilderness survival story has caught critics off guard in the best possible way.

Variety’s review praised the unexpected tonal shift, noting that Ayer “draws on his logistical talent, and even his taste for violence, to craft a tale of survival that makes us feel the pain, the fear and the hardship.” The review also highlighted how convincingly the film’s dangers, including a tense encounter with a grizzly bear, translate to the screen.

Critics have been quick to praise Pitt’s central performance, with Variety specifically noting that he “gives a true performance” as a man shaped and hardened by years of deployment. But almost universally, reviewers have singled out one very specific co-star for equal, if not greater, praise.

Odin, played primarily by a German Shepherd named Uber alongside several stunt dogs, has emerged as the film’s breakout attraction. Critic Joey Magidson wrote that the film “put a very good boy in danger for 100 minutes,” while another reviewer described the emotional bond between Pitt and the dog as the film’s true beating heart, admitting to being “a mess by the end.”

Not every element has escaped criticism entirely. Filmed in New Zealand standing in for Alaska, the movie has drawn some scrutiny for occasionally glaring digital effects work, with one reviewer pointing to an unconvincing rapids sequence as a rare weak spot. Still, most critics agree the practical elements, including the real wilderness locations and the genuine dogs playing Odin, help ground the film’s more intense sequences.

Despite those minor shortcomings, the consensus has remained overwhelmingly positive. Reviewers have described the film as a respectable, emotionally resonant entry in the survival genre, even while acknowledging it doesn’t reinvent the formula in any particularly profound way.

With ‘Heart of the Beast’ opening September 25 in theaters, its strong critical reception adds another notable entry to Pitt’s already varied 2026 output. For an actor who’s spent much of his career alternating between blockbuster spectacle and smaller, character-driven work, this latest survival drama seems poised to land firmly in the latter category, and audiences seem ready to embrace it.
