Colleen Hoover Finally Breaks Her Silence on the ‘It Ends with Us’ Fallout, and She’s Ready for a Fresh Start

Few book-to-film adaptations in recent memory have generated quite as much off-screen drama as this one did. What began as a highly anticipated big-screen version of one of the decade’s biggest literary phenomena quickly became overshadowed by a very public legal dispute between its two leads, leaving the author whose work started it all caught in an uncomfortable spotlight she never asked for.

Colleen Hoover largely stayed quiet through much of that fallout, offering only guarded, careful comments as the situation between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni played out publicly. With her next big-screen adaptation now approaching release, though, she’s finally addressing that chapter directly, and with a noticeably different tone than before.

Speaking with Variety ahead of the October 2 release of ‘Verity,’ Hoover reflected on the aftermath surrounding ‘It Ends With Us’ with a mix of empathy and hard-won perspective. “I feel for everyone, you know?” she said. “As the author, I was — and am — so proud of that movie. I think they did a great job.”

Hoover was careful to separate her feelings about the finished movie from the controversy that followed its release. “I think Blake was great in it, Justin was great in it, Brandon was great in it, and I saw the completed film before any of that happened, or I knew it was happening, so I was proud of the film!” she continued. “And I still am. It was a huge hit.”

That distinction matters given just how much attention the off-screen dispute ultimately overshadowed the film’s actual box office success and critical reception. By keeping her comments focused on the work itself rather than relitigating the legal battle, Hoover appears to be drawing a clear line between the two.

What stands out most in Hoover’s comments is just how much her emotional state has shifted heading into this next adaptation. “So, that’s what I focus on, and I’m grateful that we’re here doing another one with ‘Verity.’ It’s been a great experience, and I think the aftermath is going to be a great experience,” she said. “I’m just really, really excited for this release in a way that I don’t think I have been. I had a lot of nerves with the other ones, for a lot of different reasons, but this one is pure excitement.”

That contrast, nerves and complication surrounding her last major adaptation versus genuine excitement heading into this one, speaks to just how differently ‘Verity’ has unfolded behind the scenes. With Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett leading the cast, the psychological thriller has so far avoided any of the off-screen turbulence that defined the rollout of her previous big-screen outing.

Hoover’s measured comments come after a genuinely difficult stretch navigating unwanted scrutiny tied to one of her biggest literary successes. She’d previously stepped away from social media entirely amid the fallout, and her return to the platform drew mixed reactions from fans divided over how she’d handled the situation.

Rather than revisiting those specifics now, her latest comments suggest she’s chosen to focus forward, expressing gratitude for where things currently stand rather than dwelling on what made the ‘It Ends With Us’ rollout so complicated in the first place.

With ‘Verity’ set to hit theaters October 2, Hoover’s renewed enthusiasm suggests she’s genuinely optimistic this adaptation can stand entirely on its own merits, unburdened by the drama that complicated her last big-screen moment. Whether audiences ultimately embrace the film with that same fresh outlook remains to be seen, but Hoover herself seems ready to leave the past chapter behind.
