Terry Crews Says ‘White Chicks 2’ Has “No Obstacles” Left After ‘Scary Movie’ Success

More than 2 decades after its release, ‘White Chicks’ is still one of the most quoted comedies of the 2000s, and Terry Crews remains one of its biggest champions. Critics tore the Wayans brothers’ 2004 film apart, but audiences turned it into a cult classic, with Crews’ lovestruck Latrell Spencer and his rendition of “A Thousand Miles” becoming some of its most iconic moments. For years, the actor has been one of the loudest voices pushing for a ‘White Chicks 2’.

That enthusiasm has occasionally gotten ahead of reality. Back in 2019, Crews told a caller on ‘Watch What Happens Live’ that Shawn Wayans had assured him the sequel was moving forward, only for Marlon Wayans to post on Instagram days later that no deal was actually in place. The project stayed in limbo for years, with the brothers eventually making it clear that everything depended on how their return to ‘Scary Movie’ performed.

Now Crews believes the wait is almost over. During an appearance on ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’, the actor said he’s confident the long-rumored sequel is happening and that he’s simply waiting for the Wayans family to reach out. “Scary Movie had to perform well… and it did! So, now there’s no obstacles… I am ready for when they call,” Crews said on The Jennifer Hudson Show.

The comments spread quickly after CoveredGeekly shared them on X, though not everyone online was convinced. One reply bluntly dismissed the new ‘Scary Movie’, while another joked that the sequel could be called ‘The Squell Hunt: The Race For Acceptance’.

Crews isn’t wrong about the numbers. Released on June 5, the new ‘Scary Movie’ brought the Wayans brothers back to the franchise they created, with Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans writing alongside Anna Faris and Regina Hall returning. The film opened to a franchise-best $55 million domestically and $105.5 million worldwide, a strong start for a movie Miramax financed for $30 million.

The horror parody has since earned $231.9 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Deadline reported that it pushed the franchise past $1 billion globally and became the first pure R-rated comedy to cross $100 million domestically since 2017’s ‘Girls Trip’.

That matters because the Wayans brothers were upfront about the deal. In February, Marlon said on the ‘Rap Attack’ podcast that a strong ‘Scary Movie’ run would bring them back next with ‘White Chicks 2’ and ‘Don’t Be a Menace 2’. In April, Marlon and Shawn told Entertainment Tonight that the ‘White Chicks’ sequel could happen if the new film succeeded.

Even so, the Wayans camp hasn’t officially announced a green light. In June, Marlon told Variety the sequel was still in discussion and even entertained some wild ideas for where it could go. “‘White Chicks’ can go anywhere,” he told Variety, before adding, “I wanna do ‘A Very White Chicks Christmas.'”

The original starred Shawn and Marlon as FBI agents who go undercover as socialites Brittany and Tiffany Wilson, and fans have been asking about their return for years. Marlon himself has said people constantly ask when the sequel is coming because they love the movie so much.

Given that Crews once jumped the gun, some fans may take his latest confidence with a grain of salt. But this time, the one condition the Wayans brothers set publicly has been clearly met, making his optimism feel far more grounded than before.

If the call does come, it would be a big moment for Crews, who has joked in the past that he’d been working out for years just so he could be ready for the sequel. For now, the ball is squarely in the Wayans family’s court.
