‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ Presales Stay Hot as Box Office Trackers Hold Firm on a $25M+ Weekend
This weekend’s box office is shaping up to be one of the most crowded of the fall, and ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore‘ is right in the middle of the fight. Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ is coming off a franchise-record $61 million debut and is targeting $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend, according to Variety estimates. Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson’s ‘Primetime’, Brad Pitt’s ‘Heart of the Beast’, and ‘Forgotten Island’ are all projected to open in the high teens.
Into that mix comes a 7-year-old movie. Marvel’s re-release of its 2019 blockbuster arrives on September 25 with 4 minutes of bonus footage, a 185-minute runtime, and new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ teasers, playing on IMAX and Infinity Vision screens.
As opening day approaches, box office tracker TheFlatLannister shared an update on the BoxOfficeTheory forums that quickly circulated on Reddit’s r/boxoffice. The tracker said they were still expecting a $25 million-plus weekend for ‘Endgame’, with no change from the previous day’s estimate.
The more encouraging detail came from the ticket data itself. According to the post, the sample the tracker labels MTC3 looks very strong and continues to run ahead of MTC2 for Friday in raw tickets, while pulling way ahead in dollars. The tracker also noted that Sunday is ahead of Thursday in raw tickets at MTC3, suggesting the film’s momentum should hold up nicely through the weekend.
That read matches what the wider industry is saying. TheWrap reported that independent trackers and exhibition sources see the reissue making at least $25 million domestically, with a good chance at clearing $30 million. Variety’s estimates place it in the $25 million to $28 million range.

If it passes the higher end, TheWrap notes it would set a new unadjusted record for a re-release weekend, topping the $30.2 million earned by Disney’s 3D reissue of ‘The Lion King’ in 2011. Even at the lower end, ‘Endgame’ has a solid shot at beating ‘Resident Evil’ for the No. 1 spot.
Not every forecast has been as bullish. Earlier domestic projections ranged from $19 million to $28 million, and presale enthusiasm doesn’t always translate directly into final grosses once opening weekend arrives.
Overseas, the excitement is even more striking. In China, presales for the September 24 to 27 window reached a $965,000 cumulative total after 2 days of nationwide sales, beating the 2-day totals of ‘The Batman’ at $313,000 and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at $435,000. Some trackers are now pointing to a global opening north of $50 million.
There’s also a historic record in play. ‘Avatar’ currently holds the worldwide crown at $2.923 billion after its own 2022 re-release pushed it past the $2.79 billion earned by ‘Endgame’. Industry estimates suggest the Encore would need roughly $124.3 million more worldwide to take the top spot back.

Much of the buzz ties directly to Marvel’s next big swing. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18 and has already racked up more than $50 million in presales, with TheWrap reporting it could challenge the $360 million domestic opening record of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.
Not everything has gone according to plan, though. The Encore’s new scenes leaked online ahead of release, prompting Disney to issue takedowns. So far, that hasn’t appeared to slow down ticket sales in any meaningful way.
