‘One Piece’ Fans Face a Long Wait as Anime Wraps Its Final Episode of the Year

For more than a quarter century, fans could count on the Straw Hats showing up almost every single week. That era is officially over, and the ‘One Piece’ anime break arriving this weekend is the clearest sign yet of how much the long-running series has changed.

Toei Animation switched ‘One Piece‘ to a seasonal release model beginning with the Elbaph arc, marking a shift from the continuous year-round schedule the show had followed since its October 1999 premiere. Under the new approach, the anime releases a maximum of 26 episodes per year, roughly half of what the studio previously produced.

Now, the official ‘One Piece’ account has confirmed that Episode 1180, airing on September 27, will be the final episode of the year. A return date has not yet been announced, leaving fans to settle in for another extended wait.

The confirmation arrived with a wintry visual showing a small figure trudging through the snow above the ‘One Piece’ logo. The news was first flagged earlier this month by prominent fan account Pew, who noted the episode would close out the first season of the Elbaph arc.

The upcoming episode is titled ‘Elbaph in Despair – Diabolical Covenant, “Domi Reversi”‘ and adapts Chapter 1150 of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. It follows Episode 1179, ‘A Life-or-Death Second! Gaban vs. the Knights of God’, which adapted Chapter 1149.

Based on where the manga material lands, many fans expect the season to end on a major cliffhanger. Reports suggest the anime will pause right around the moment Imu appears after possessing Saint Manmeyer Gunko.

The current run began on April 5 with Episode 1156, ‘The Long-Sought Elbaph! The Big Reunion Banquet’. That puts this season at a total of 25 episodes, just under the annual cap.

International fans on different platforms will get the finale on slightly different dates. Crunchyroll viewers can watch Episode 1180 on September 27, while Netflix subscribers will get it on October 3.

Netflix’s schedule currently trails by about a week, with Episode 1179 arriving on the streamer on September 26. That gives Netflix fans a few extra days before the break officially begins for them.

Toei hasn’t confirmed an exact return date, but reports indicate that the second phase of the Elbaph arc won’t return until sometime in 2027. Some outlets estimate the break could last around 6 months, though that remains unofficial.

While fans may not like the wait, the new schedule has been widely credited with improving the anime’s quality. The seasonal approach gives Toei more time to deliver consistent animation instead of racing to meet a weekly deadline.

Fans do have something big to look forward to in the meantime. At One Piece Day ’26 in Chiba on August 23, Toei announced ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’, which is set to hit Japanese theaters in summer 2027.

The film will adapt the legendary God Valley Incident and is described as the franchise’s first canon theatrical movie. Toei tied the release to the manga’s 30th anniversary on July 22, 2027, and also announced a second film, ‘One Piece Film: BAAD’, for 2029.

No director or exact release date has been revealed yet. More details may arrive at upcoming events, including a potential New York Comic Con panel and Jump Festa 2027 in December.
