Some movies explode on opening weekend, while others find their audience slowly, and Alan Ritchson’s ‘Motor City’ is proving to be a textbook case of the latter on Amazon VOD. The gritty revenge thriller has turned a rough theatrical start into one of the more surprising streaming stories of the fall.

Its big-screen run was a tough one. ‘Motor City’ opened in theaters on July 24 but grossed only $2.9 million against a reported $30 million production budget. Critics were more forgiving, giving the film a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 95 reviews.

The film’s second life began quickly once it arrived on digital. Just 1 day after hitting digital platforms, it broke into the Top 10 on both Amazon and Apple’s digital movie charts, competing with Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’.

Now it has hit a genuine milestone. According to FlixPatrol data reported by Screen Rant, ‘Motor City’ has spent 30 days on Amazon VOD’s Top 25 Movies chart in the United States, a full month. At the time of that report, it ranked as the 14th most-watched movie on Amazon VOD in the US, ahead of titles like ‘Young Washington’, ‘One Night Only’ and ‘The Death of Robin Hood’.

There’s still room to climb in terms of longevity. The longest-running title on the chart is Sydney Sweeney’s psychological thriller ‘The Housemaid’, at 233 days, while ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ sits at 119 days.

Part of the film’s staying power may come from its bold concept. The ’70s-set revenge thriller skips unnecessary chatter entirely, including almost no dialogue, and lets Ritchson’s fists do the talking. Director Potsy Ponciroli, who previously helmed the acclaimed Western ‘Old Henry’, relies on action, visuals, and soundtrack to tell the story.

The music is a major piece of that puzzle. Chad St. John wrote the screenplay, while Grammy-winning Detroit musician Jack White provides the soundtrack. The result is a film that feels like an action thriller fused with a music video with operatic flair.

The plot keeps things simple and brutal. Ritchson plays John Miller, an ex-con seeking revenge on a gangster who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit and stole his girlfriend in 1977 Detroit. Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Ben McKenzie and Lionel Boyce round out the cast.

The milestone arrives during a banner year for the star. Ritchson appears in Amazon’s top 2 shows nationwide, with ‘Reacher’ in 2nd following the end of Season 4 and the spinoff ‘Neagley’, where he guest stars as Jack Reacher, sitting in 1st. ‘Motor City’ extends that success into the movie space.

It’s also a passion project for Ritchson beyond his performance. He’s credited as a producer on the film alongside Jon Berg, Greg Silverman, Chad St. John, Cliff Roberts and Joshua Harris.

For a movie that entered digital release with modest expectations, reaching a full month in Amazon’s Top 25 is a meaningful achievement. The continued viewership suggests audiences are finding value that the box office numbers failed to predict.

Not every fan is surprised by the reaction the film’s silence generates. One reply under Screen Rant’s post joked that everyone who tuned in didn’t realize it was a silent movie, a playful nod to the film’s most distinctive and divisive creative choice.

Do you think Motor City deserved more attention in theaters?
