‘Verity’ Star Dakota Johnson Has a Blunt Message for Anyone Obsessing Over Her Love Life: ‘Get a Life’

Celebrity romance speculation has become a modern spectator sport, and few stars understand that better than Dakota Johnson, whose love life has been dissected by fans and tabloids for years. The actress has long preferred to keep her private world private, even as every public outing gets treated like breaking news.

The chatter recently kicked into high gear once again. Johnson has been linked to Machine Gun Kelly after the pair were seen heading toward Taylor Swift’s NYC apartment, nearly a month after it was reported that she and musician Role Model had broken up. When Vogue previously asked about her relationship status following those reports, she said she didn’t want to say anything about it.

Now she has spoken more directly about the constant speculation. Appearing on the September 25 episode of Vogue’s ‘The Run-Through‘ podcast, she explained that even dinners with her manager or lawyer end up framed as sightings with a mystery man. “I also don’t care,” Johnson said. “I think it’s just futile.”

She made it clear she has no intention of correcting false narratives. “People are gonna believe what they wanna believe, and I don’t have the energy to fight for that,” she added. “I would much rather focus on other things in my life. Every day, there’s something on the internet that’s ridiculous and true or not true, and I don’t care, like, get a life.”

The 36-year-old also revealed she’s intentionally distancing herself from social media. Johnson admitted that in her younger 20s, she enjoyed being online for fun and laughs because she loves a clever thing, but said she no longer engages with it. “I feel really uncomfortable with the constant documenting of people’s lives,” she explained.

It’s a stance consistent with how she has handled fame for years. The daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith has historically kept many details of her private life close to the vest, even while being romantically linked to several notable names.

Her comments arrive as she promotes one of her most anticipated projects. Johnson stars alongside Anne Hathaway in ‘Verity’, which opens only in theaters on October 2. Michael Showalter directs from a screenplay by Nick Antosca.

The thriller follows Lowen as she moves into the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity, where she discovers what appear to be disturbing autobiographical confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett. As she becomes entangled in their lives, separating fiction from reality becomes increasingly difficult.

Recent clips have teased an intense dynamic between the leads. In one, Johnson’s Lowen threatens to take everything from Hathaway’s character, trying to prove she’s faking her condition. The film is rated R for sexual content, some nudity, language, violence, and bloody images.

Johnson’s approach stands out in an era when many stars feel pressure to address every rumor. Rather than issuing denials or confirmations, she has chosen to simply opt out of the conversation entirely.

Whether the internet actually takes her advice and finds something else to focus on remains to be seen, but she has made her position clear either way. For now, the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ star seems far more interested in her work than in feeding the gossip cycle.
