Remember the Kid From ‘Jerry Maguire’? He Is Back With His Boldest Role Yet

Few child stars left a mark on 90s cinema quite like the bespectacled kid from ‘Jerry Maguire’, and 3 decades later, Jonathan Lipnicki is proving he still has plenty to offer. The actor, now 35, has quietly been working to rebuild his career, and his latest move is turning heads.

Lipnicki skyrocketed to fame at age 6 alongside Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger in the Cameron Crowe film, playing Ray Boyd, the son of Zellweger’s Dorothy. He followed that breakout with 1999’s ‘Stuart Little’, 2000’s ‘The Little Vampire’ and 2002’s ‘Like Mike’, becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable young performers.

Now he’s back in a very different kind of project. Lipnicki has a role in A24’s ‘Primetime’, which follows the making of ‘To Catch a Predator’ and the final sting operation that led to its cancellation. Robert Pattinson stars as a fictionalized version of Chris Hansen, while Lipnicki plays a character using the screen name Crazyfrog73, one of the predators caught in the film.

His return has been noticed far beyond Hollywood, with Croatia’s Index.hr highlighting that the grown-up ‘Jerry Maguire’ kid is acting again. Lipnicki marked the moment by attending the film’s Los Angeles premiere on September 23 at Beyond Fest, wearing a green suit. It was his first red carpet appearance after a 2-year hiatus.

The role is anything but family-friendly. In his scene, his character enters the house and immediately drops his pants in front of Skyler Gisondo’s Dan during his first time as a decoy, and the moment includes full frontal nudity. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lipnicki admitted he laughed when he learned about the scene, but said it also gave him a lot of anxiety before he decided to take the plunge.

Lipnicki’s path to this point hasn’t been simple. He intentionally cut back on work during high school so he could experience those years fully, and says he has no regrets about the decision. He later went on to study acting.

He has been refreshingly honest about the challenges since then. Speaking to E! News, he explained that he still had an agent and auditioned during those years, but rarely landed roles. He described acting as something he has always loved, even when it didn’t love him back.

He has also admitted there was a stretch when he may not have been very good, saying he had lost track of who he was. Rather than getting discouraged, he focused on improving his craft and taking accountability for what he could control.

These days, Lipnicki is careful about what he signs on for. He revealed to People that he turned down about 5 movies in a single year, saying he wants to turn his career around and is confident the best is still ahead. His recent credits include leading the 2024 slasher ‘Camp Pleasant Lake’ and an episode of TBS’s revival of ‘The Joe Schmo Show’.

More is on the way. He’s joined the cast of ‘Mazel Tough’, a romantic comedy exploring modern dating through the lens of the Jewish community, which marks Evan Scolnick’s directorial debut. The film is set to begin production this fall in Tulsa. Lipnicki has also expanded his work behind the camera. He became an executive producer for the production company Buffalo 8, adding another dimension to his career.

‘Primetime’ places him back on the big screen in a decidedly darker role than the characters associated with his childhood. For an actor determined to be seen as more than a nostalgic memory, that kind of risk may be exactly the point.
