‘Don’t Breathe 3’ Is Officially Happening, and Rocky Is Finally Coming Back

A decade after audiences first held their breath in a dark Detroit house, ‘Don’t Breathe 3’ is finally taking shape, and the news landed exactly where horror fans would want it to. The franchise that turned a simple home invasion into one of the tensest thrillers of its era is returning to its roots.

The original film arrived in 2016, directed by Fede Álvarez, who co-wrote it with Rodo Sayagues. It followed 3 home intruders, played by Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, and Daniel Zovatto, who became trapped and hunted in the home of their blind target, played by Stephen Lang. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert produced alongside Álvarez.

The reveal came during a celebration of the original. At the film’s 10th-anniversary screening at Beyond Fest, Álvarez revealed that the third installment is in the works, with a script he has written and Levy and Lang returning. The event took place on September 26 at the MUBI Theatre at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.

The news was first reported by Dread Central, which confirmed that Levy and Lang will once again play Rocky and the Blind Man. The Q&A panel for the screening included Álvarez, co-writer Sayagues, Levy, Lang, and Minnette.

This detail is a big deal for longtime fans. The 2021 sequel, ‘Don’t Breathe 2’, brought Lang back without Levy. Bringing her back gives the new film a chance to revisit unfinished business between the 2 characters.

Levy had been teasing the possibility for a while. During a “Queens of Scream” panel at Texas Frightmare Weekend in May 2024, she said she had dinner with Álvarez a few weeks earlier and that they might have talked about a sequel. At the time, it was essentially a rumor that might never come to fruition, but the Beyond Fest announcement has made it real.

The first film earned a strong reputation among critics and genre fans. Variety’s Dennis Harvey described it as a muscular exercise in brutal, relentless peril that should please genre fans. It also won Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards, and Lang took home Best Supporting Actor at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

Álvarez designed the story with a specific philosophy in mind. He set out to make an original film that used less blood and focused more on suspense than on shocking audiences. Critics took note, with one comparing its carefully built suspense to a good John Carpenter movie.

Lang’s performance remains the heart of the series. He played the Blind Man, a Gulf War veteran blinded by shrapnel, and even wore contact lenses that greatly restricted his vision, especially in low light, to prepare for the role.

The timing is especially exciting for Levy’s fanbase. Dread Central noted that rumors have also swirled about her possibly returning as Mia in ‘Evil Dead Wrath’, putting her at the center of what feels like a horror renaissance. The prospect of revisiting both Mia and Rocky has fans buzzing.

Not everyone is fully sold on a third chapter. Under Dread Central’s post, one reply argued that some films simply don’t need a threequel, while another said they hope the new film is closer to the first entry than the second.

Plot details, casting beyond the returning leads, and a release date remain under wraps. For now, knowing that Álvarez is back behind the script and Rocky is returning to face the Blind Man is enough to make horror fans hold their breath all over again.
