‘One Piece’ Leaves Elbaph on a Brutal Cliffhanger as the Anime Heads Into a Long Break

For more than 2 decades, ‘One Piece‘ anime fans could count on a new episode nearly every week, but this year has rewritten that rhythm entirely. The beloved adventure series has spent 2026 adjusting to a brand-new production model, and viewers are now feeling its biggest consequence yet.

The change has been a dramatic one for longtime watchers. Rather than airing continuously throughout the year as it has since debuting in October 1999, the anime moved to a two-cour seasonal model that caps output at roughly 26 episodes annually, with planned gaps built in between batches. The goal is to boost animation quality and avoid catching up to the ongoing manga.

That shift was on full display earlier this year. The anime went on hiatus from January through March before the Elbaph Arc picked back up in April, returning on April 5 after a 3-month break with the Straw Hats reaching the giants’ island of Elbaph.

Now the second bookend of that schedule has arrived: ‘One Piece’ will return in 2027, with Episode 1180 serving as the final episode for this year. The series confirmed via its social media account that the episode was indeed the finale.

The episode itself went out with a bang. Titled “Elbaph in Despair – Diabolical Covenant, ‘Domi Reversi’,” it premiered on September 27 and began streaming on Crunchyroll the same day, with a Netflix release set to follow the following week. It continues the fallout from Imu seizing control of Gunko, pushing the Giants of Elbaph into an even more dire situation than fans expected.

The preview had already hinted at the stakes, showing Imu using the skill Domi Reversi while facing the giants. Episode 1180 serves as the finale to the first season of the Elbaph Arc and leaves things on quite a massive cliffhanger.

Unfortunately, fans don’t yet have a concrete date to circle. An exact return date is currently being kept under wraps, though insiders predict the next batch of episodes will likely premiere in Spring 2027. ComicBook.com noted that if the hiatus matches the length of the one at the start of this new schedule, new episodes might not arrive until sometime next April.

Speculation has also swirled around what the break might set up. Some fans hoped the finale would tease God Valley, but neither Toei Animation nor the official announcement confirmed that Episode 1180 would end there or directly set up the 2027 movie, ‘One Piece Film: God Valley’.

The Elbaph season brought plenty of fresh additions. Yuichi Nakamura was revealed as the voice of Loki, debuting in the arc alongside the cast for the Knights of God. The anime also introduced new theme songs, with “Luminous” by AiNA THE END as the opening and “That Future” by Jisoku 36km as the ending.

Visually, the season has earned praise too. One reply under DiscussingFilm’s post simply celebrated the anime for always having great colors, a sentiment echoed by many viewers who noticed the upgrade in quality under the new schedule.

Fans won’t be left completely empty-handed during the break. A new LEGO special animation project is set to release with 2 episodes on September 29, while Season 3 of the live-action series is set for 2027 after recently revealing its new Alabasta cast.

Still, nothing quite replaces weekly adventures with Luffy and the crew. As viewers adjust to defined batches of episodes separated by planned breaks, anticipation for the Elbaph Arc’s second season is already building.
