’Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings Into Uncharted Territory at the Domestic Box Office

Every few years, a blockbuster comes along that rewrites the record books, but the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ box office run has gone further than almost anyone predicted. Tom Holland’s latest outing as the web-slinger has spent the summer toppling records that once seemed untouchable.

The film arrived with enormous expectations. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it stars Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei and Mark Ruffalo, and hit U.S. theaters on July 31. The story finds Peter Parker on his own protecting New York City as his powers evolve and a new telepathic threat emerges.

From the very first weekend, it was clear something special was happening. The movie opened to about $360 million in North America, edging out the previous record holder, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which debuted with $357.1 million. It also claimed the biggest opening day ever at $169 million and the biggest preview haul of all time at $72 million.

Now the film has cleared yet another historic hurdle. According to Global Box Office, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially become the first movie to cross $950M in the history of the American box office. The account also noted it is the first movie of the decade to sell over 70 million tickets domestically.

That milestone caps a remarkable climb. The film became the fastest to cross $800 million domestically, doing it in 19 days compared to 23 for ‘The Force Awakens’. It later reached $900 million in 36 days, compared with 50 for the ‘Star Wars’ blockbuster.

The biggest moment came earlier this month. ‘Brand New Day’ became the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office with $936.7 million, surpassing the long-held $936.6 million record set by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. Sony announced it broke the record in 47 days.

Its staying power has been just as impressive as its opening. The movie held the top spot at the domestic box office for 6 consecutive weekends. Industry trackers put its domestic total at $947.6 million and its worldwide haul at $2.48 billion. Ticket sales tell an equally striking story. World of Reel estimated the film has sold around 75 million tickets so far, while ‘The Force Awakens’ sold 110 million tickets during its run.

The success hasn’t been limited to North America. The film also became the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India, reaching $52 million and overtaking ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. It also posted the biggest 10-day start ever at $655 million.

Still, one crown remains out of reach for now. It trails ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’ on the all-time worldwide chart, with roughly 62% of its box office coming from international markets. That’s a notably domestic-heavy split compared to Marvel’s biggest team-up.

The financial return has been massive regardless. Against a $225 million production budget, the film’s worldwide gross stands at roughly 11 times its cost. For Marvel, the run arrives after nearly a decade of uneven box office performance. ‘Brand New Day’ has overtaken ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in several categories while coming remarkably close in others.

Fans online are soaking it all in. One reply under Global Box Office’s post summed up the mood simply, cheering that it’s just big Spidey, a playful reminder that the friendly neighborhood hero has become the biggest box office draw in America.
