Brandon Sklenar Went Platinum at the VMAs, and the ‘Housemaid’ Star Is Nearly Unrecognizable
Hollywood has a long tradition of actors physically transforming themselves when they want to signal a new chapter, and Brandon Sklenar’s VMAs look proves he’s not afraid to play that game. The 36-year-old actor has built his reputation on a very specific image, one defined by dark hair, rugged charm, and a string of brooding leading-man roles. That familiarity is exactly what made his latest public appearance such a jolt.
Audiences know him best from projects like ‘1923’, where he broke out as Spencer Dutton, and ‘The Housemaid’, in which his character Andrew Winchester sported lush brown hair. The same goes for his turn in ‘It Ends With Us’, where he also kept the darker look fans have come to expect.
So when Sklenar arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night, heads turned for a very different reason. Deadline shared a video on X of the actor on the carpet. One reply under the post simply asked “Who?”, which pretty much sums up how dramatic the change is.
He didn’t just lighten up a shade or two. Today described it as not only blond but platinum blond, with his hair cropped shorter than usual and his face completely clean-shaven, a combination that left him nearly unrecognizable.
The outfit leaned into the edgy new direction. Sklenar wore a black leather jacket, a white tank, black trousers, oversized sunglasses, and snakeskin shoes, a combination the footage shows paired with dark-framed shades that frame the bleached crop nicely.

It was a casually cool look that stood apart from the couture drama elsewhere on the carpet. The leather bomber and simple tank gave the platinum hair room to be the undisputed star of the ensemble.
Sklenar wasn’t just there for photos. He hit the carpet ahead of serving as one of the ceremony’s presenters, joining a lineup announced by CBS and MTV that included Charli xcx, Teyana Taylor, Troye Sivan, Tyla and David Corenswet. The eclectic presenter roster mixed music, film and TV, with fellow names like Paris Hilton, Jeff Probst and Chuck D also on the list.

He also had company. Sklenar walked the carpet alongside Hassie Harrison, his co-star in the upcoming film ‘The Rescue’, who wore a black sheath dress with her blonde hair styled in an elegant updo.
That pairing makes plenty of sense for fans of Taylor Sheridan’s TV universe. ‘The Rescue’ doubles as a ‘Yellowstone’ universe reunion for Sklenar and Harrison, who appeared in the flagship series. The film follows a former rodeo cowboy who sets out to bring his daughter home after she is kidnapped for ransom, with her devoted dog by his side.

Sklenar and Harrison play a former couple who reunite to rescue their child in the thriller. The stacked cast also includes Josh Duhamel, Spencer Treat Clark, Austin Amelio, Tim Blake Nelson and Josh Lucas, and the movie marks the feature film debut of Robby, the main canine star.
The actor has been open about how different this shoot felt. In a recent exclusive interview with People, he explained that the vast majority of the film was shot outdoors in nature, mostly working alongside a dog and a horse, and described the experience as meditative and healing. He also credited his time in Sheridan’s world, including competing in a cattle cutting competition, for making him comfortable in the saddle.
Whether the platinum crop is tied to an upcoming role or is simply a bold personal reinvention remains unclear. Either way, it’s a striking departure for an actor so closely associated with Western grit and dark-haired leading-man energy. With ‘The Rescue’ heading to theaters in January, Sklenar is clearly entering a busy stretch, and he’s doing it with a look nobody saw coming.
