Sabrina Carpenter Was Censored While Defending Her Team at the VMAs
Pop’s most unexpected partnership of the year delivered one more headline-worthy moment on music’s biggest night, as Sabrina Carpenter’s VMAs speech alongside Madonna turned into an unscripted, partially censored highlight. The pair’s single “Bring Your Love” arrived on April 30 as the lead single from Madonna’s album ‘Confessions II’, which dropped on July 3. The record went on to earn widespread acclaim, with several critics calling it Madonna’s best album since ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor’.
The duo had already proven their chemistry live. Madonna and Carpenter performed the track together at Coachella earlier this year, and “Bring Your Love” debuted at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Madonna’s highest chart debut since 2012. It also cracked the top 30 on the UK Singles Chart.
Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles began with the 2 stars front and center. They opened the ceremony with a performance of the song, with Carpenter at the piano while Madonna lounged on top of it.
Minutes later, they were back onstage to collect the Moon Person for Best Collaboration. It capped a big night for both, as each was also nominated for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, with “Bring Your Love” earning a Song of the Year nod as well.
That’s when things got playful. Madonna took the mic to explain how the collaboration came together, joking that she had first reached out through Carpenter’s representatives and ended up waiting 5 days for a reply. Describing herself as famously impatient, she said she eventually decided to message Carpenter directly on Instagram.
According to Madonna, Carpenter answered her right away, and within weeks the 2 were in the studio together. She then praised Carpenter as wonderfully professional, a quality she said is hard to find these days, while slyly implying the same couldn’t be said for the singer’s team.
Carpenter wasn’t about to let her management take the fall in front of millions. The 27-year-old jumped in to defend them, joking that her team was panicking backstage, but she used a curse word that caused the broadcast delay to cut her audio. Viewers watching at home were left confused as the sound suddenly dropped out mid-speech.
She didn’t make any innuendos, but the single expletive was enough to trigger the censors. Carpenter then clarified to the crowd that her team does respond to people; she simply replies faster herself, adding that contacting her directly is always the best route, which earned applause from the audience.
Despite the teasing, the moment ended warmly. Madonna embraced Carpenter and suggested they head backstage for a drink, before Carpenter introduced her collaborator to one more round of cheers as the pair walked off hand-in-hand.

Madonna also used the speech to explain the song’s meaning, describing it as a track about people who think they know you better than you know yourself. Carpenter, for her part, told her collaborator she loved her very much.
The win was just one piece of a massive evening for the Queen of Pop. Madonna walked away with a leading 7 trophies, including Artist of the Year and Best Dance, at a ceremony hosted by Snoop Dogg.
The collaboration’s success hasn’t been limited to the US, either. “Bring Your Love” had already won Best Collaboration Video (International) at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan earlier this year. For fans, the bleeped exchange only added to the charm of a partnership built on mutual admiration, quick wit, and a direct message that clearly paid off.
