Tom Holland Wants Spider-Man To Team up With the Human Torch, and His Dream Pitch Involves a Paper Bag

Marvel fans have spent years dreaming about a Spider-Man and Johnny Storm team-up, and Tom Holland is officially on board with the idea. The actor has played Peter Parker since ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ in 2017, growing up on screen as the MCU’s friendly neighborhood hero. Now, he’s looking ahead to what could come next for the web-slinger.

That future got a big spotlight thanks to a milestone comic. Holland sat down with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ director Destin Daniel Cretton for an interview featured inside ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #1000. Cretton took the reins on that project after Holland pushed for deeper creative input following ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

During the conversation, Holland revealed a long love for Brian Michael Bendis’ ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ run, including a decade-old pitch involving Kraven the Hunter and an admiration for the Ultimate Clone Saga. But the moment that grabbed fans’ attention was his desire to suit up as the Bombastic Bag-Man alongside Johnny Storm.

“I like the Bag-Man because I love his relationship with Johnny Storm. That would be something I would really be eager to try to explore in the future,” Holland said in the interview, as first reported by Bleeding Cool.

For newer fans, the reference might seem random. The Bombastic Bag-Man was born out of Spidey borrowing a Fantastic Four suit, making it a natural bridge between the 2 franchises. The idea of Holland’s Peter wearing a paper bag over his head is also a perfect fit for the humor and heart his version of the character has become known for. It turns a long-rumored crossover into something concrete and genuinely funny.

Unlike in the past, the MCU now has its own Johnny Storm ready to go. Joseph Quinn brought the character to life in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, starring alongside Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.

The feeling appears to be mutual between the 2 actors. Both have separately floated the idea of a live-action hangout, with Quinn calling Holland the best Spider-Man ever and saying the pairing makes sense. Holland, meanwhile, previously named Quinn as his top dream screen partner from the comics.

Social media lit up within hours of the interview surfacing. Fans shared original comic pages of the paper-bag hero and urged Marvel to greenlight the team-up, with some joking Holland should wear the bag to his next red carpet. Others simply celebrated the idea of pairing two of Marvel’s most charming young heroes.

Holland’s Spider-Man has had plenty going on lately. In ‘Brand New Day’, Peter even went toe-to-toe with the Hulk, taking down the green giant before Bruce Banner was sent to a secure facility. That storyline has since been tied into the lead-up to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ through new scenes in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’.

Quinn, for his part, is set to continue as Johnny in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which brings the Fantastic Four into the larger Avengers fold. He has also praised Robert Downey Jr., who plays Doctor Doom, as a leader on set.

With both characters firmly established in the same cinematic universe, the pieces are finally in place for the crossover fans have wanted for years. Whether Marvel takes Holland up on his Bag-Man pitch remains to be seen, but the enthusiasm from both actors makes it hard to ignore.

For now, fans can only imagine Peter Parker swinging through New York in a borrowed Fantastic Four suit with a paper bag on his head, bickering with a fiery Johnny Storm along the way.
