‘The Odyssey’ Star Elliot Page Goes Shirtless for New York Magazine’s First-Ever Men’s Style Issue

Few publications are as woven into the fabric of their city as New York Magazine, which is exactly why its latest launch is turning heads. The outlet has released the first standalone men’s style issue in its nearly 60-year history, and Elliot Page is one of the faces leading the charge. It’s a bold, unconventional debut for a magazine best known for long-form journalism.

Rather than chasing typical fashion magazine tropes, the 89-page print issue leans into the kind of narrative storytelling New York has published for decades. Editor-in-chief David Haskell has said he’s confident the experiment will be a success, and the unusual approach extends to its covers, which aren’t tied to a traditional cover star feature.

The setting alone makes this issue stand out. The shoot took place at the Russian & Turkish Baths on East 10th Street in the East Village, where Senior Men’s Style Editor Samuel Hine and photographer Ryan McGinley gathered a cross-section of matinee idols, it-boys and lit boys. Stylist Miyako Bellizzi dressed them in what the magazine playfully described as some fashion, but hardly any.

Page fronts one of the issue’s 4 covers, alongside Troye Sivan, Marlon James, and Mike Faist, with Christopher Abbott. The 26-page portfolio inside also features Sam Nivola, Jeremy O. Harris, Brandon Flynn, Eddie Huang, Rashid Johnson, Justin Peck and Francesco Clemente, among others. Many outlets shared Page’s cover images on X, crediting McGinley for the photography, and the posts exploded all over social media.

The images live up to that promise. On the cover, Page stands shirtless with his arms crossed in front of a weathered wooden door, wearing only blue striped shorts and a thin chain necklace, his hair slicked and damp from the steam.

A second shot captures him leaning beside a mirror in the bathhouse, his reflection adding an intimate, almost cinematic layer to the portrait. It’s a very different mood from the polished glamour of a typical style-issue cover. The raw, candid setting suits McGinley’s signature documentary feel.

The authentic shoot arrives after an earlier online mix-up. Over the summer, a viral image claiming to show Page on the August cover of Men’s Health turned out to be fake, originating from a self-described satire account. The magazine confirmed it never published such a cover, noting that its actual August cover featured Lenny Kravitz.

That makes this genuine cover moment feel all the more significant. Page, a Canadian actor and producer who came out as transgender in 2020, has been open about his journey over the years, attracting substantial international attention.

The cover also lands in the middle of a banner year for the actor. Page appears in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, and his casting even drew public praise from ‘The Matrix’ director Lily Wachowski.

That film has become one of the defining blockbusters of the year, giving Page a major platform just as he steps into the spotlight for this landmark issue. The timing couldn’t be better for a star whose profile keeps rising.

Between the unconventional bathhouse setting, the 4-cover strategy and one of the year’s most talked-about actors, the debut men’s style issue has instantly become a conversation starter.

Whether it turns into an annual tradition for the magazine will ultimately depend on sales. For now, Page’s cover is proof that an honest, stripped-back approach can make just as much of an impact as the flashiest fashion spread.
