The Iconic ‘Rocky’ Steps Just Became a Popcorn Bucket to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary

Few movie moments are as instantly recognizable as a sweat-suited Rocky Balboa sprinting to the top of a Philadelphia staircase, and now that image is getting the collectible treatment with a ‘Rocky’ popcorn bucket. The original film, released in 1976, went on to win Best Picture and turned Sylvester Stallone into a Hollywood icon. Half a century later, it’s still considered the ultimate underdog story.

Those famous steps outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art carry plenty of meaning for Stallone, too. His new memoir is even titled ‘The Steps’, a nod to the 72 steps Rocky runs up during the original film’s training montage. So it’s fitting that the anniversary celebration is putting that landmark front and center.

The collectible is tied to a major theatrical event. Amazon MGM Studios, Park Circus and Fathom Entertainment have announced that tickets are now on sale for ‘Rocky 50th Anniversary’, a newly remastered 4K presentation playing nationwide from November 7 to 11.

The screenings will also feature more than just the restored film. Audiences will get an exclusive featurette from ‘I Play Rocky’, Peter Farrelly’s new movie about how Stallone got ‘Rocky’ made. That film opens in limited US theaters on November 6 before expanding nationwide on November 20. Now, fans have their first glimpse of the centerpiece collectible. Outlets shared images of the ‘Rocky’ 50th anniversary popcorn bucket on X, and the posts quickly spread.

The design is as literal as it gets. The Staircase bucket recreates the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, with a small Rocky figure in his gray sweatsuit standing on the edge with his arms raised in triumph. Popcorn fills the landing below him, while the side of the bucket features the film’s title in bold red letters.

The Staircase bucket isn’t the only item fans can chase. Fathom Entertainment, Amazon MGM Studios and Park Circus announced 3 theatrical exclusives in total, including a 130-ounce round popcorn tin and a 44-ounce beverage cup.

Getting one may take some planning. All 3 items are limited to select participating theaters nationwide, with availability and purchase limits varying by location, and prices haven’t been announced. Since the event only runs a few days, anyone eyeing the Staircase bucket may want to call ahead.

Some outlets have tried to estimate costs based on similar releases. Fantasy Land News projected the Staircase bucket could land between $40 and $50, with the tin at $15 to $20 and the cup at $10 to $15, though those figures remain unconfirmed.

As with any novelty popcorn bucket, the internet had jokes. One user replying to the post quipped that they weren’t about to eat popcorn out of the city of Philadelphia. Another suggested the studio should have gone with boxing gloves instead.

Still, the overall reaction has been largely enthusiastic, with many praising the bucket as one of the more creative concessions in recent memory. Some coverage has already dubbed it a contender for the ultimate anniversary collectible.

The re-release caps off a massive year for the franchise’s legacy. Between the 4K restoration, the ‘I Play Rocky’ biopic, and Stallone’s memoir, fans have more ways than ever to revisit the story that launched his career.

For collectors, though, the real prize may be that tiny Rocky figure raising his arms atop the steps. It’s a fun, nostalgic tribute that turns one of cinema’s most triumphant moments into a movie night souvenir.
