‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Swinging Back Into Theaters With Rosario Dawson’s Deleted Scene Restored
Few superhero movies have dominated a summer quite like ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and now a ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ re-release is officially in the works. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, the film has become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office and the third-highest-grossing ever worldwide. Its global haul has climbed to roughly $2.5 billion.
Sony has plenty of reason to look back at its own playbook. After the record-breaking run of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ from December 2021 into early 2022, the studio brought that film back to theaters for Labor Day weekend in 2022. More recently, a re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ won the weekend box office, proving audiences are still eager to return for extended cuts.
The news broke through an exclusive report from Deadline, which revealed that the new version will feature extra footage including, but not limited to, Rosario Dawson’s character Claire Temple.
This is a big moment for Marvel’s Netflix-era fans. Claire Temple appeared in the first 2 seasons of ‘Daredevil’, as well as ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Luke Cage’ and their crossover series ‘The Defenders’. Dawson had already hinted that something was left on the cutting room floor. She revealed just before release that she had filmed a scene for the MCU blockbuster, but it didn’t make the final version.
According to TheWrap, the scene showed Dawson caring for Holland’s Peter Parker in the hospital when he wakes up, but it was cut and swapped with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher to increase the emotional impact of the moment. CBR noted that the sequence also showed Claire’s role in the Punisher’s plan to get Spider-Man into a hospital for gunshot wound treatment without revealing his secret identity.
Claire Temple may not be the only addition. Deadline’s sources indicated there will be more surprises in the extra footage, though details remain under wraps. Cretton has previously acknowledged there’s plenty of material to draw from. He told TheWrap that a tested version of the film ran 30 minutes longer, although he still called the theatrical version his preferred cut. The current release runs 2 hours and 25 minutes.

The timing may also be about making box office history. TheWrap suggested that a reissue with never-before-seen footage could push the film to $1 billion domestically, a feat never before accomplished.
Analysts had previously suggested that crossing that threshold seemed unlikely without a re-release. Now, Sony may have found the perfect way to get there. The big question is timing. There’s no word yet on when the re-release will arrive, though Deadline noted that logic points to Sony securing premium large-format screens during a quiet time at the box office.
That strategy mirrors Disney’s approach with ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, which included 6 minutes and 17 seconds of extra footage from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ for viewers who bought tickets in the InfinityVision premium format.
As exciting as the news is for Daredevil fans, some moviegoers are skeptical of the trend. One user replying to DiscussingFilm’s post argued that the re-release strategy needs to stop, saying nobody will return to theaters just for a few extra minutes of content.
Still, if the ‘Endgame Encore’ results are any indication, plenty of fans will happily buy a ticket to see Claire Temple finally make her big-screen debut alongside Spider-Man.
