Few actors have had a career as beloved as John Goodman’s, and his appearance at the ‘Digger’ premiere has fans talking once again. The 74-year-old is best known for playing Dan Conner on ‘Roseanne’ and for Coen Brothers classics like ‘The Big Lebowski’. His new film is a major one. ‘Digger’ is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Goodman plays Compson, the dictatorial President of the United States.

On Monday, September 28, Goodman walked the red carpet at the film’s Los Angeles premiere at the Directors Village in Westwood. He was joined by his wife, Anna Beth Goodman, 57, for a rare joint appearance.

What caught everyone’s attention was his remarkable transformation, as he showed off a weight loss of around 200 pounds. Goodman wore a classic black suit with a white-and-gray striped shirt and a gray tie, while Anna Beth looked lovely in a burgundy outfit with her hair worn down.

The couple looked relaxed and affectionate as they posed together in front of the bright orange backdrop, with Goodman wrapping his arm around his wife. It was one of the night’s most talked-about moments.

Their bond goes back a long way. The pair met while Goodman was in Missouri filming ‘Everybody’s All-American’ and married in New Orleans in 1989, after he proposed on the banks of the Mississippi River. Goodman has credited his wife with playing a big role in his recovery and with raising their daughter right. Their rare red carpet outing felt like a celebration of that partnership.

The Los Angeles event wasn’t his only big night. On September 22, Goodman attended the global premiere of ‘Digger’ at London’s Leicester Square as part of the Film and TV Charity Royal Film Performance. There, he wore a sharp black tuxedo that highlighted his slimmer figure. Photos from the event quickly went viral as fans marveled at how healthy he looked.

While the change may seem sudden to some, it has been a long time coming. Goodman began his health journey in 2007, when he weighed 392 pounds and decided to stop drinking. He told ABC News in 2016 that he had grown tired of looking at himself in the mirror and felt it was becoming dangerous. By 2018, he had been sober for 10 years.

He later disclosed in a Rolling Stone interview that he had lost more than 200 pounds. Earlier, his health coach, Mackie Shilstone, spoke about his 100-pound weight loss in 2015. Goodman has been candid about how he approached the change. He told ABC he chose a slower, more deliberate path instead of the crash diets he tried in the past, when he would lose weight and then fall back into old habits.

In a 2018 AARP interview, he credited portion control as key to his success. He has also said he enjoys walking his dogs and boxing to stay active. Still, he isn’t one to brag. Goodman has joked that he doesn’t want to serve as an example to anyone in case the weight comes back, adding a characteristically self-deprecating touch to his story. This isn’t the first time his transformation has made headlines.

In July 2025, he stepped out at the ‘Smurfs’ premiere, where he voiced Papa Smurf, just months after sustaining a hip injury in the U.K. Now, with a major Iñárritu film on the way and his wife by his side, Goodman looks happier and healthier than ever. It’s a welcome sight for fans who have followed him for decades.
