Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover Share a Surprise ‘Verity’ Premiere Moment

Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover are two of the most recognizable names in modern popular fiction, and both have become major players in Hollywood’s book-to-screen boom. For Hoover, the arrival of ‘Verity’ in theaters marks another milestone. The film is the 4th of her novels to reach the big screen, following ‘It Ends With Us,’ ‘Regretting You,’ and ‘Reminders of Him.’

Henry has had a big year on screen as well. Netflix’s ‘People We Meet on Vacation’ premiered on January 9, becoming the first screen adaptation of one of her books. Directed by Brett Haley, the romantic comedy stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, and it went on to earn a nomination for Outstanding Movie at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

That shared moment made the latest red carpet photo feel especially fitting. Variety shared an image of Henry and Hoover posing together at the ‘Verity’ premiere in New York. Henry chose a shimmering silver mini dress, while Hoover stood beside her in a flowing gold gown with a red wrap.

The premiere took place at AMC Lincoln Square 13, where Hoover joined the film’s stars, including Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett. Parade described her gold gown and red pumps as a head-turning look.

The appearance carried extra meaning. Parade noted that Hoover attended while dealing with a cancer diagnosis, and she still made sure she was there for 1 of the year’s biggest movie premieres. Director Michael Showalter and co-star Ismael Cruz Córdova also joined the cast on the carpet.

The source novel has a history of its own. Hoover self-published ‘Verity’ in 2018, and Grand Central Publishing acquired it in 2021. It marked a shift away from the contemporary romance that defined much of her earlier work.

The film follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, who is hired as a ghostwriter for renowned author Verity Crawford under mysterious circumstances. After finding disturbing autobiographical notes, Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality while growing closer to Verity’s husband, Jeremy. Nick Antosca wrote the final screenplay, which followed earlier drafts from several writers, including Hoover and Lauren Levine.

Hoover is also a producer on the film, alongside Antosca, Showalter, Stacey Sher, and Hathaway. The release date was originally set for May 15 before Amazon MGM Studios moved it to October 2.

Henry’s own slate is even busier. 5 of her novels are either adapted or in development as films: ‘People We Meet on Vacation,’ ‘Beach Read,’ ‘Book Lovers,’ ‘Happy Place,’ and ‘Funny Story.’ For ‘Beach Read,’ Phoebe Dynevor has been cast as January Andrews, with Patrick Schwarzenegger as Gus Everett.

Henry is also expanding her role behind the camera. She is writing the screenplay for ‘Happy Place,’ and Tango acquired adaptation rights to ‘Book Lovers’ in 2023. She was also involved in ‘People We Meet on Vacation,’ which Haley made from a screenplay by Yulin Kuang.

Fans have already responded to her first film. ‘People We Meet on Vacation’ drew 17.2 million views in its opening period on Netflix, according to What’s on Netflix’s comparison of this year’s movie debuts. Critics were more divided, with Metacritic’s average landing at 50 out of 100.

For readers, the photo brought together 2 authors whose books have dominated bestseller tables and online reading communities. Hoover’s large BookTok following has been a key part of Amazon MGM Studios’ marketing for ‘Verity,’ and Henry’s presence gave the premiere another boost of bookish star power.
